Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to healthcare and education by supporting two prominent nursing institutions in Nigeria. During a recent visit to Holy Rosary School of Nursing and Midwifery, Mbaise, Imo State, which is scheduled to commence operations in September 2025, Obi donated ₦10 million to facilitate its establishment and assured stakeholders of his continued support.
Speaking at the site of the proposed institution, Obi emphasized the critical role of human capital development in national progress, reiterating that healthcare, education, and poverty alleviation must remain central to Nigeria’s developmental priorities. He underscored the importance of well-trained medical professionals in delivering quality healthcare services, stating that investing in such institutions would significantly strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
“A strong healthcare system is built on the foundation of competent professionals. Supporting the training of nurses and midwives is not just an investment in education; it is an investment in the health and well-being of our people,” Obi remarked.
Following his visit to Mbaise, the former governor proceeded to Our Lady of Lourdes School of Nursing in Ihiala, Anambra State, one of the leading nursing schools in the region. Commending the institution for its unwavering dedication to producing skilled healthcare workers, he also donated ₦10 million to bolster their ongoing efforts. He applauded the management and students for their commitment to excellence in medical training and urged them to remain steadfast in their mission to provide quality healthcare services.
During his engagements at both institutions, Obi reiterated his belief that human capital development remains the key to Nigeria’s transformation. He lamented the state of the country’s healthcare and education sectors, stressing that government and well-meaning individuals must prioritize investments in these areas to ensure sustainable growth.
“For any nation to progress, it must invest in its people. Education and healthcare are the bedrock of development. If we truly want to lift our people out of poverty, we must channel resources into institutions that train professionals who will serve society,” he stated.
His visit and donations have been met with widespread appreciation from the management of both institutions, students, and community leaders, who hailed his visionary leadership and selfless contributions toward national development.
The Holy Rosary School of Nursing and Midwifery in Mbaise is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the shortage of qualified nurses and midwives in the country. Similarly, Our Lady of Lourdes in Ihiala continues to be a beacon of excellence in healthcare education.
Peter Obi’s gesture is yet another demonstration of his commitment to a better Nigeria, where access to quality healthcare and education is not a privilege but a fundamental right. As he continues to advocate for targeted investments in these critical sectors, he remains optimistic that a new Nigeria is possible—one where human capital development drives national progress.
