Anambra 2025: APC Vows to Unseat Soludo, Rules Out Alliance

With the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2025, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reaffirmed its commitment to wresting power from the incumbent governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, and his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)-led administration. The party has dismissed any notion of forming alliances or making compromises, insisting that it is fully prepared to take over the Anambra Government House.

Political analysts believe the race is shaping up to be a fierce contest among three dominant parties—APGA, APC, and the Labour Party (LP)—as no other party has gained significant momentum ahead of the primaries. With the political landscape heating up, APC has declared itself the most formidable alternative to the current administration.

Speaking at a party event in Awka on Friday, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, made it clear that the party has set its sights on taking over leadership in the state. He emphasized that APC remains the best choice for the people of Anambra, as it is the only party capable of ending Soludo’s tenure.

“The only party today that is willing, able, and competent to chase Governor Charles Soludo out of Government House, Awka, is our party—the APC,” Basiru declared.

He further dismissed any speculation that the party might engage in negotiations or alliances to bolster its chances in the election. In a bold declaration, he referenced a popular song by the late Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti, saying:

“If anyone insinuates that our party is not ready for this task, I will simply respond with Fela’s song: No agreement today, no agreement tomorrow. That is why we have taken the Anambra assignment very seriously.”

This statement underscores APC’s determination to launch a robust campaign in its quest to take over the state’s leadership.

A Three-Horse Race Intensifies

As the election date draws closer, Anambra’s political scene is increasingly being defined by APGA, APC, and LP, with each party working to strengthen its support base. Despite being the ruling party, APGA faces a tough challenge in maintaining its grip on power, especially with APC’s aggressive campaign strategy and LP’s rising influence.

Governor Charles Soludo, who was elected under the APGA platform in 2021, is seeking reelection and has continued to tout his administration’s achievements in governance, infrastructure, and economic development. However, opposition parties argue that more needs to be done and that the state requires a change in leadership.

APC, on its part, is banking on its national structure, political influence, and grassroots mobilization to secure victory. The party believes that with the right candidate and a strong campaign strategy, it can upend APGA’s hold on the state.

Similarly, Labour Party (LP), which gained significant momentum in the 2023 general elections, is also eyeing the governorship seat. The party’s rising popularity, especially among young voters, poses an additional challenge to both APGA and APC.

The Road to the Primaries

While the political battle is already taking shape, much will depend on the party primaries, where each contender will select its flag bearer for the election. APC has promised a transparent and competitive process that will produce a strong candidate capable of defeating Soludo.

With Senator Basiru’s latest remarks, it is evident that the APC is leaving nothing to chance as it strategizes for the upcoming election. The party’s rejection of any alliance signals its confidence in going head-to-head with both APGA and LP.

As political activities continue to gain momentum in Anambra State, all eyes are now on the primaries, which will determine the major contenders for the November 8 election. One thing is certain: the battle for Government House, Awka, will be a fiercely contested one.
