Anambra Government Pledges Swift Intervention on Collapsed Ulasi Bridge

The Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, has reassured residents and neighboring communities of Nnewi South Local Government Area that immediate steps will be taken to address the recent collapse of the Ulasi Bridge. This vital bridge, which has served as a crucial link between Anambra and Imo states for over four decades, caved in on March 5, 2025, when a heavily loaded truck carrying gravel attempted to cross it.

In response to the situation, the Anambra State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Ifeanyi Okoma, led a government delegation to inspect the site on March 7, 2025. Upon arrival, he was received by key stakeholders, including the Chairman of Nnewi South Local Government, Hon. Van George Ezeogodi (Ijele Utuh), and the Member representing Nnewi South II Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi. These leaders provided him with a comprehensive briefing on the bridge collapse and the challenges affecting road infrastructure in the area.

During the visit, Hon. Ezeogodi described the incident as a significant setback for both residents and businesses, stressing the urgency of government intervention. He highlighted the economic hardship the collapse had caused, particularly for traders and commuters who depend on the bridge for their daily activities. However, he expressed optimism that the improved security situation in the region under Governor Soludo's administration would create a favorable environment for infrastructural development.

"The insecurity that once stalled projects here has been effectively tackled. Ukpor and its neighboring areas are now safer than ever. If you drop a pin today, you can return tomorrow and still find it," he stated confidently.

Further details emerged regarding the incomplete dual-carriage bridge project in the area, which had been stalled due to security concerns. It was revealed that the original contractor assigned to the project was kidnapped during a period of heightened insecurity. Sadly, he passed away shortly after his release, leading to the abandonment of the construction.

Commissioner Okoma reassured the affected communities that the government fully understands the urgency of the situation and is committed to providing a prompt solution. He reaffirmed Governor Soludo’s dedication to infrastructural development, vowing that residents would not have to endure the consequences of the bridge collapse for long.

"This bridge is a lifeline for the people of Nnewi South and beyond. We recognize its importance and will act swiftly to restore seamless movement and economic activities," he assured.

Also present at the inspection were prominent community leaders, including representatives of the Ukpor Improvement Union, local government officials, and security personnel. Their collective presence underscored the unity and determination to resolve the crisis.

With the government's commitment to swift intervention, residents of Nnewi South and neighboring communities can remain hopeful that the Ulasi Bridge will soon be reconstructed, ensuring a return to normalcy for businesses and commuters in the area.
