Anambra South Senatorial Bye-Election: Intense Political Jostling Begins Amid Uncertainties

Following the unfortunate demise of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah on July 27, 2024, the race to fill the vacant Anambra South Senatorial seat has begun in earnest. Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has yet to announce a date for the bye-election, political activities have gained momentum, with aspirants across party lines engaging in consultations and mobilization efforts.

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has drawn considerable interest, with more than five notable figures, including Chief Akai Egwuonwu, Paschal Agbodike, Ebuka Onunkwo, and Dr. Jude Emecheta, expressing their intention to contest.

In the All Progressives Congress (APC), prominent names such as Dr. Obinna Uzoh and Sir Azuka Okwuosa have emerged as contenders. The Labour Party (LP) has Dr. Obinna Uzoh in the race, while Mr. Peter Ekwueme is contesting under the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). However, it remains unclear whether the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Young Progressives Party (YPP) will field candidates.

Despite the flood of aspirants, political analysts argue that many contenders are merely seeking attention on social media rather than engaging in grassroots campaigning.

Religious influence is expected to play a decisive role in the election. Given that the late Senator Ubah was a Roman Catholic, it is widely speculated that his successor may likely emerge from the same denomination. While some argue that an Anglican candidate should be considered since Governor Chukwuma Soludo is also Catholic, Pentecostal aspirants may find it challenging to gain traction.

The outcome of the election may also hinge on party strength and strategic positioning. YPP, which previously dominated the zone due to Ubah’s influence, faces uncertainty following his demise and his earlier defection to APC ahead of the 2025 Anambra governorship election. Without a strong rallying figure, YPP’s ability to retain the seat is doubtful.

APGA, as the ruling party in the state, stands a chance of clinching the position if it conducts a credible primary. Meanwhile, APC’s prospects could improve if the federal government throws its weight behind the party’s candidate.

Zoning considerations will also be crucial. Anambra South is divided into three blocs: Old Aguata Union (OAU), Old Nnewi, and Old Ihiala. While Old Nnewi produced the late Ubah, some argue that it is time for Ihiala or OAU to take the seat.

Among the leading aspirants, Akai Egwuonwu, a businessman and owner of Anambra Rice Mill, hails from Amichi, Nnewi South LGA. Despite his strong business background, his strained relationship with Governor Soludo could affect his chances of securing the APGA ticket.

Paschal Agbodike, the current House of Representatives member for Ihiala Federal Constituency, has strong backing from Ihiala stakeholders. However, critics argue that his perceived lack of generosity could hinder his chances.

Ebuka Onunkwo, the CEO of Seahorse Lubricants, is relatively unknown politically despite his business success. Analysts suggest that his chances largely depend on APGA’s popularity.

Obinna Uzoh, a seasoned politician and businessman from Ihiala LGA, has contested multiple elections under different parties. While some view him as a capable candidate, stakeholders may be reluctant to support him due to his financial independence and political unpredictability.

Azuka Okwuosa, a veteran politician and former Anambra Commissioner for Works, hails from Ekwusigo LGA. He has contested for various positions in the past, but securing the APC ticket and financing a competitive campaign remain his major hurdles.

With political strategies shifting and party primaries yet to be concluded, the Anambra South Senatorial bye-election promises to be highly competitive. As INEC prepares to unveil the election schedule, it remains to be seen which aspirant will emerge victorious in what is set to be a closely watched contest.
