Mourning in Umudioka, Awka Anambra State as 84-Year-Old Man Is Murdered in Cold Blood

Umudioka village in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State has been plunged into deep mourning following the brutal murder of an 84-year-old elder, Ichie Michael Nwobu, by unidentified assailants.

The shocking incident, which took place in the early hours of Sunday, March 2, 2025, has sparked outrage among community elders and stakeholders, who have condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.

According to reports, the deceased was attacked and fatally stabbed by yet-to-be-identified hoodlums who broke into his residence while his family members were away. He further revealed that although the community initially considered staging a protest at the Anambra State Government House, they later opted for a media engagement to raise awareness about the tragic incident.

Calls for Justice Intensify

Echoing similar sentiments, the Chairman of Okolobia Umudioka, Chijioke Uzoh, and a key stakeholder in the community, Anayo Obiakor, emphasized that the press briefing was necessary to inform the world about the atrocious act and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

"We cannot remain silent while such a grievous crime goes unpunished. The perpetrators of this heinous act must be brought to book to prevent a recurrence," Obiakor said.

The leaders called on the Anambra State Government, security agencies, and relevant authorities to expedite investigations and apprehend those behind the killing. They warned that failure to take swift action could embolden criminals and pose a greater threat to the peace and security of the community.

Police Reacts to the Incident

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for Anambra State, Tochukwu Ikenga (SP), stated that he was unaware of the incident. However, residents are urging the police and other security agencies to act swiftly, as the murder has sent shockwaves across the village and beyond.
