In a landmark event for medical education in Nigeria, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, proudly inducted 125 new doctors into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) during its 54th induction ceremony. The event, held at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi, Anambra State, was a momentous occasion, celebrating years of rigorous training and academic excellence.
The highlight of the ceremony was the renewed commitment of the university’s governing council to enhancing infrastructure at the College of Health Sciences, Nnewi. This pledge aligns with the policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Education and President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at transforming Nigeria’s educational and healthcare landscape.
Commitment to Infrastructure Development
Speaking at the induction, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi, emphasized the urgent need to upgrade facilities at the Nnewi campus. He noted that during his familiarization tour of both the Awka and Nnewi campuses, it became clear that significant improvements were needed to bring the latter up to standard.
“As I stated during my visit, having interacted with the management, staff, and students, it is crucial that we take swift action to develop the necessary infrastructure that will bring the Nnewi campus closer to, if not on par with, the Awka campus,” Kukoyi stated.
He further stressed that beyond constructing new projects, the university must adopt a culture of maintaining existing infrastructure. According to him, the days when institutions clamored for new funding while neglecting current facilities must come to an end.
“While we are committed to rehabilitating and modernizing infrastructure across the university, we have also reached an understanding with the management that maintenance of existing structures must be prioritized,” he added.
A Milestone for New Medical Professionals
The induction ceremony was a moment of joy and accomplishment for the 125 graduating doctors, their families, and the university at large. Kukoyi congratulated the graduates on their successful completion of medical training, encouraging them to uphold the institution’s reputation as they step into the professional world.
“As you embark on this noble profession, we urge you to be shining examples of excellence, integrity, and dedication. Go out and make Nnamdi Azikiwe University proud,” he advised.
The event was graced by top dignitaries, including the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu; the Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja; the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Jude-Kennedy Emejulu; and Emeritus Prof. Joseph Adinma.
Adding a touch of solemnity to the occasion, the medical oath was administered to the new doctors by Dr. Fatima Kyari, the representative of the Registrar/CEO of MDCN. The oath-taking ceremony marked the official recognition of the graduates as licensed medical practitioners, ready to serve the nation’s healthcare needs.
A Bright Future for Healthcare in Nnewi
The university’s commitment to improving medical training facilities is seen as a major step toward strengthening healthcare education and delivery in the region. With the planned upgrades, future generations of medical students at Nnamdi Azikiwe University will benefit from enhanced learning environments, state-of-the-art facilities, and better-equipped faculty.
As the newly inducted doctors begin their careers, their alma mater’s promise of infrastructural development signals a brighter future for medical education in Nigeria.
