Chief George Moughalu Clinches Labour Party Ticket for Anambra Governorship Election

In a decisive and peaceful primary held at Finotel Hotel, Awka, on Saturday, Chief George Moughalu, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority, emerged as the candidate of the Labour Party for the upcoming Anambra State governorship election. The primary, attended by officials from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and various electoral observers, marked a significant step in the state’s political trajectory as it heads toward the highly anticipated November 8, 2025, election.

Moughalu triumphed with a resounding victory, securing 573 votes out of the 592 valid votes cast, leaving his only rival, John Nwosu, with just 19 votes. A total of 649 delegates were invited to the event, with 601 delegates accredited. The voting process was transparent and smooth, reflecting the democratic spirit within the party as it looks to present a united front in the upcoming gubernatorial race.

In his acceptance speech, Moughalu expressed gratitude to the party and the people of Anambra, pledging to work tirelessly in promoting the Labour Party’s agenda. He called on all stakeholders, including his opponent, to put aside differences and unite in the quest for victory in the general election. He emphasized that with such unity, success was inevitable.

“We must set our agenda and ensure it reaches every corner of Anambra State,” Moughalu declared, underscoring his belief in the potential of the state and the crucial need to harness its human and natural resources. He further assured that his extensive experience in public service, coupled with his deep political acumen, positions him as the right candidate to challenge the incumbent, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who currently holds the governorship seat under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Moughalu also sought to inspire confidence in his supporters and emphasized that the Labour Party was not just a fleeting political force but one that would continue to play a significant role in shaping Anambra’s future.

“Anambra is blessed with abundant human and natural resources. Our task is to ensure a level playing field for everyone, and by doing so, we will unlock the full potential of this great state,” he said.

The Labour Party is no stranger to success in Anambra, having already secured two Senate seats in recent elections. Moughalu’s candidacy is seen as a significant push for the party as it aims to consolidate its political influence ahead of the 2025 gubernatorial election.

In a show of unity, the Returning Officer for the primary, Bennett Etanabena, congratulated the delegates for the peaceful conduct of the election and encouraged them to work in unison to ensure a successful campaign. He pointed out that Anambra was increasingly becoming a stronghold for the Labour Party, and with the party's solid performance in recent elections, it was poised to take the governorship seat in the coming polls.

“Anambra is a Labour Party state,” Etanabena remarked. “We already have two senators in the National Assembly, and statistics indicate that Anambra will play a pivotal role in the 2027 presidential race. Therefore, it is only fitting that the state will also produce the next governor.”

As the 2025 governorship election draws nearer, all eyes are on Moughalu and the Labour Party as they prepare to take on the incumbent governor, Professor Soludo, and other political forces within the state. Political analysts believe that the outcome of the election will be crucial in determining the direction of the state’s future governance.

For Moughalu and the Labour Party, the stakes have never been higher. With the primaries concluded, it is now time to focus on rallying the people of Anambra to back their vision for a prosperous and inclusive state. The Labour Party, confident in its candidate’s abilities, is ready to take on the challenge and make its mark in the state’s political history.

In the coming months, the political landscape in Anambra will be one to watch, as the race for the 2025 governorship election intensifies, and Chief George Moughalu prepares to lead his party to what they hope will be a resounding victory at the polls.
