Tragedy in Jigawa: Groom and Three Friends Arrested Over Bride’s Death After Marathon Sex

Tungo village in Sule Tankarkar Local Government Area of Jigawa State has been thrown into mourning after a newlywed bride tragically lost her life under deeply disturbing circumstances. Authorities from the Jigawa State Police Command have confirmed the arrest of her husband, Auwal Abdulwahab, aged 20, alongside three of his friends, in connection with the incident.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu Adam, issued a formal statement shedding light on the harrowing events that unfolded on the night of April 26, 2025. At approximately 10:00 PM, an alleged act of coerced sexual violence within the couple’s matrimonial home reportedly led to the untimely death of the bride.

Shock and outrage have gripped the local community as further details emerged. According to SP Shiisu, preliminary investigations point to a conspiracy orchestrated by Abdulwahab and three of his associates—identified as Nura Basiru, Muttaka Lawan, and Hamisu Musa—to force the young bride into non-consensual sexual activities. The attempt, horrifying in its brutality, ended fatally for the unsuspecting woman.

Accounts gathered by law enforcement suggest that the newlyweds had earlier disagreements regarding marital intimacy. Instead of resolving their differences peacefully, Abdulwahab allegedly resorted to an unspeakable act with the assistance of his friends. Together, they reportedly violated the sanctity of their home and the dignity of the woman he had vowed to protect.

Distress calls from residents swiftly brought police officers to the scene. Responders transported the unconscious bride to Gumel General Hospital, but despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. Following protocol, her remains were handed over to her grieving family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, has since directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Dutse for a comprehensive and confidential inquiry. Police authorities are keen to ensure that every aspect of the case is meticulously investigated before charges are formally brought against the suspects.

According to SP Shiisu, the suspects are expected to face two major charges: criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide. These charges, under Nigerian law, carry severe penalties and underline the gravity of the allegations against the four men.

The heart-wrenching death of the young bride has ignited widespread condemnation, with many calling for swift justice. Tungo village, ordinarily a quiet rural settlement, has found itself at the center of a grim national conversation about violence against women and the sanctity of marriage.

Residents who spoke under conditions of anonymity described the deceased as a “kind and reserved” young woman who was looking forward to building a happy home. Her life, they lamented, was cut short by a cruel betrayal by the very person who was supposed to be her lifelong companion.

Authorities have assured the public that the investigation will leave no stone unturned. They emphasized that justice will not only be done but will also be seen to be done, offering a sliver of hope to a community devastated by an unspeakable loss.

Meanwhile, legal experts have weighed in, noting that if found guilty, the suspects could face life imprisonment or even the death penalty under the laws governing culpable homicide in Nigeria. The incident has also reignited calls from human rights organizations for better protection of women, particularly in the rural north where traditional practices often silence victims of abuse.

The police continue to urge anyone with further information relevant to the case to come forward to aid ongoing investigations. For now, the community of Tungo remains enveloped in sorrow, grappling with a tragedy that will long be remembered for its cruelty and its stark reminder of the perils of unchecked violence within domestic settings.

As the wheels of justice begin to turn, many hope that this case will set a precedent, sending a strong message against gender-based violence across Jigawa State and beyond.
