Anambra Security Forces Intercept Kidnappers, Rescue Couple and One Other in Dramatic Night Operation

A kidnap attempt in Neni, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State ended in failure on Saturday night, thanks to the swift and coordinated response of the Nigerian Police and supporting security operatives. The foiled operation led to the rescue of three hostages, including a husband and wife, and the recovery of a vehicle at the scene.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra State Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, officers from the Neni Division moved quickly following a distress call received at approximately 8:45 p.m. The alert was triggered by unusual activity along Okacha Junction, a known traffic point within the town of Neni.

Prompt intervention by the police team not only thwarted the kidnapping but also ensured that all three captives were safely extricated from what could have escalated into a tragic situation. Ikenga confirmed that one of the victims’ vehicles was left behind by the fleeing suspects and has since been secured by law enforcement.

Local sources, who preferred to remain anonymous, noted that gunshots were heard in the area around the time of the rescue, suggesting a possible confrontation between security operatives and the criminal elements. No casualties were reported on either side during the operation.

Reinforcement arrived soon after the initial police response, as a joint task force comprising personnel from the Nigerian Military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and members of the local vigilante network launched a follow-up operation to track down the perpetrators. Reports indicate that the suspects managed to escape using a black Lexus 350 SUV, allegedly stolen from one of the rescued individuals. The vehicle, bearing the registration number ABJ 557 LD, is now the subject of an intensive manhunt.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the officers involved. He assured the public that the command remains committed to stamping out crime and maintaining peace across the state.

While acknowledging the progress made during the rescue, Orutugu also emphasized the importance of public collaboration in ensuring long-term safety. He appealed to residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the nearest security outpost.

“Community participation is vital,” Orutugu stated through the command’s spokesperson. “We call on the good people of Anambra to partner with us. The battle against criminality cannot be won by the police alone.”

Meanwhile, the rescued victims, whose identities were not disclosed for their safety, are reportedly in stable condition and receiving support. Psychological evaluations and debriefings are ongoing, ensuring they recover from the trauma of the event.

The scene of the incident, Okacha Junction, remains under increased surveillance as security teams continue combing surrounding areas. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the criminals belong to a larger syndicate operating in or around Anaocha LGA, a concern that has spurred wider investigations.

Locals have praised the rapid police response, citing it as a sign that recent improvements in community policing are yielding results. One shop owner near the junction remarked, “This place used to be quiet, but in the last few months, we’ve heard of strange movements at night. We’re grateful to the police for not letting this one get out of hand.”

Efforts are underway to trace the black SUV through state-wide vehicle tracking systems and surveillance networks. Security operatives are urging mechanics, fuel station attendants, and transport workers to be on alert for any suspicious vehicles matching the description.

This latest development adds to a growing list of security interventions credited to the current police leadership in Anambra, which has seen increased patrols, intelligence-driven operations, and improved collaboration with non-state security actors.

Observers believe the case highlights both the persistent challenges of armed criminal activity in southeastern Nigeria and the evolving capacity of law enforcement agencies to respond effectively. Analysts say a consistent show of force and community cooperation may be key to sustaining the momentum against kidnappers and armed robbers who threaten regional stability.

As investigations continue and search operations intensify, authorities are hopeful that the suspects will be apprehended soon. The police are urging anyone with information related to the incident or the whereabouts of the Lexus SUV to contact the nearest station or reach out via the Anambra State Police emergency hotlines.

The successful rescue effort is being seen as a morale booster for both security operatives and citizens alike. It sends a clear message to criminal elements that Anambra State is not a safe haven for lawlessness.
