A newly surfaced video has brought fresh clarity to the tragic death of a 14-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police during a traffic enforcement operation in Ibadan, Oyo State. The footage contradicts earlier reports that the police were pursuing an alleged internet fraudster, instead showing that the incident occurred during an attempt to apprehend the boy’s father for traffic violations.
The video captures a joint task force of officers from the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Traffic Management Authority (OYTMA) as they try to intercept a Black Honda Accord driven by Odunayo Alade. The driver was accused of flouting traffic rules near the Airport Roundabout in the Alakia area. As the car sped away despite repeated orders to stop, a gunshot rings out, followed by voices in Yoruba urging the officers to continue the pursuit, saying things like, “They should pursue him,” and “He can’t escape.”
The car eventually comes to a halt, and the video shows a crowd gathering around the scene. The boy is seen lying motionless on the ground, blood staining the pavement nearby, as officers surround him. Two men appear to try placing him back into the vehicle. Among the crowd, questions arise about who fired the fatal shot, while the distraught father is shown grabbing the police officer believed to have discharged the weapon, crying out, “Shoot me; you have to shoot me too.”
Following the release of the footage, the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Osifeso Adewale, issued a statement providing further details. According to the police account, the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. after Alade violated traffic regulations and accelerated in defiance of orders to stop. During the escape attempt, his vehicle collided with two OYTMA vehicles and a Police Buffalo Patrol truck. Barricades were set up to halt the vehicle, but Alade allegedly rammed through them, endangering officers and other road users.
During the ensuing chase, a police corporal fired his weapon, with the bullet piercing the rear of the car and striking the boy seated behind the driver. Despite efforts to save him, the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The officer who fired the shot has since been detained, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
The video’s release has reignited public discussion about the use of force in law enforcement and the risks posed by high-speed pursuits, especially when innocent lives are caught in the crossfire. The heartbreaking footage puts a spotlight on the need for accountability and reforms in policing tactics to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.
Communities and authorities alike await the outcome of the investigation as they seek justice for the boy and strive to ensure that traffic enforcement operations do not come at such a devastating cost again.
