A storm of controversy is brewing online following a startling accusation leveled against a senior officer of the Nigerian Police Force. The claim, made publicly via the social platform X (formerly Twitter), has raised fresh concerns about the transparency and accountability of law enforcement in the country.
A Nigerian man, whose identity remains undisclosed for safety concerns, took to the platform to narrate a deeply troubling experience. He alleged that Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Gerald Chidozie Udechukwu sold him a Toyota Hilux vehicle, which he later discovered had allegedly been stolen—by other police officers.
According to the accuser, the transaction was presented to him as legitimate. It was only after acquiring the vehicle that unsettling truths began to surface. Upon conducting background checks and further inquiries, the buyer learned that the Hilux was reported stolen under suspicious circumstances. He claims that those responsible for the theft are none other than members of the Nigerian Police Force.
Feeling betrayed and determined to pursue justice, the man says he contacted the Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi (@Princemoye1), as well as the official handle of the Nigerian Police (@PoliceNG). However, despite submitting reports and following up for over three months, he alleges that no tangible steps have been taken to investigate the case or discipline the officer involved.
"This policeman, CSP Gerald Chidozie Udechukwu, sold me a Hilux vehicle that was allegedly stolen by policemen. I reported this to the Force PPRO and @PoliceNG three months ago, but no action has been taken," he wrote in his post. He also tagged another public figure, @YarKafanchan, possibly in a bid to amplify the situation.
Public reaction to the allegation has been intense, with many Nigerians expressing their frustration and skepticism about police accountability. Users on X flooded the post with comments that both sympathized with the whistleblower and highlighted their lack of trust in the Nigerian Police Force.
One user, @Youngdr1903, wrote: “This one is another jaw-dropping oo. You won’t hear anything again, bro, because they all have different games each of them runs in the dark. So they will surely keep each other's tracks from light.”
Another user, @Okpanachi, suggested that visual proof could help the man’s case: “You should also post a picture of the Hilux. That’ll greatly help you win.”
The wave of reactions paints a grim picture of public sentiment toward law enforcement in Nigeria. @Loula120 lamented, “Lesson learned from this very unfortunate ordeal. Trust these people at your own peril!”
A more sarcastic remark came from @enochusoro: “Not mocking you sir, just thinking why I’ll buy anything from a Nigerian police officer.”
Others took a more philosophical approach. @the_onbeatable offered a stark choice: “Two ways to do this. One, you make up your mind that anything can happen to you, so put your house in order. Then go all the way screaming out in every corner to get justice. If you perish, you perish! Two, you take your loss and run! They have marked you already. Your choice.”
Perhaps the most cynical comment came from @tolu_of, who expressed little hope for accountability. “As we all know…the @PoliceNG @PoliceNG_CRU always cover up for their own. So no matter what, this man…he ain’t facing any law…he is the law. Except he doesn’t have mouth in the force, they will publicly dismiss him…but a ranking officer is always free.”
Despite the damning allegations and growing online support, the police have yet to issue a formal response. The silence has only added fuel to the fire, reinforcing a widespread belief that internal protection within the force outweighs justice.
The incident underscores the systemic issues confronting the Nigerian justice system, particularly the challenges citizens face when trying to hold powerful individuals accountable. Whether the claims will trigger an internal investigation or be swept under the rug remains to be seen.
Until then, the public watches, and the tweets continue.
