The Edo State Police Command has made a significant breakthrough in a chilling murder case that has sent shockwaves through Benin City and beyond. On June 20, 2025, police officials confirmed the arrest of 31-year-old Joshua Osaigbovo, who confessed to the killing of a young woman, 21-year-old Osato Festus Edogiaweria. Her decomposed body was recovered from a shallow grave just a few meters from the suspect’s residence in the Iyanomon community, within Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
What began as a missing person report turned into a homicide investigation that led detectives through weeks of painstaking inquiry, aided by a mix of traditional police work and technical intelligence. Osato had been reported missing by her mother, Mrs. Ojo, at the Aduwawa Police Division on April 25, 2025. According to the report, the young woman had left home on April 20 with a friend and never returned.
The case took a darker turn when it was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department. There, specialized operatives from the Family Unit took over, launching a more intensive investigation. With growing suspicions and digital trail analysis, detectives eventually zeroed in on Osaigbovo. He was taken into custody on June 18, 2025, just two months after Osato’s disappearance.
During interrogation, Osaigbovo admitted to inviting Osato to his home on April 27. He claimed that a disagreement broke out between them, which escalated into a physical altercation. According to his confession, Osato fell during the struggle, hit her head on the floor, and died on the spot. Rather than seek help or report the incident, the suspect said he made the grim decision to dispose of her body.
Using a wheelbarrow, he transported her remains to a nearby bush and buried her in a shallow grave close to his home. This act, he told investigators, was a panicked attempt to cover up what he described as an unintended death. His confession led police to the burial site where, following standard forensic procedures, the body of the young woman was exhumed on June 20.
CSP Moses Yamu, the Public Relations Officer of the Edo State Police Command, released a formal statement to the press confirming the incident. He praised the efforts of the investigating officers, emphasizing the command's commitment to justice and public safety. According to Yamu, the level of professionalism displayed by the Family Unit during the investigation reflects the state police command’s broader strategy of using both human intelligence and technology to combat crime.
Recovered evidence from the suspect included the victim’s phone, which investigators believe could provide additional insight into the moments leading up to her death. Digital forensics experts are currently analyzing the device for any relevant messages or call logs that may support or challenge Osaigbovo's version of events.
The community of Iyanomon has expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the discovery. Residents described Osato as a vibrant and friendly young woman who had her whole life ahead of her. News of her untimely death and the disturbing circumstances surrounding it has heightened calls for more rigorous safety measures and quicker police responses in missing person cases.
Legal proceedings are expected to commence soon. The police have assured the public that the suspect will face the full weight of the law once the investigation is fully concluded. Authorities are also urging the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious behavior and providing timely information.
The case has highlighted growing concerns about gender-based violence and the need for increased awareness, particularly among young women. Advocates and human rights groups are calling for justice not only for Osato but for all victims whose stories never make headlines.
As the investigation enters its final stages, the Edo State Police Command remains resolute in its vow to pursue justice. The tragic end of Osato Festus Edogiaweria now stands as a somber reminder of the dangers women continue to face, even among those they may know and trust.
