Destiny Etiko Raises Alarm Over Southeast Killings as Prominent Igbo Entrepreneur, Fish Magnet, is Murdered

Nigerians are yet again confronted with the painful reality of growing insecurity, especially in the southeastern region of the country. The tragic death of Anambra-born businessman Ifesinachi Onyekere, popularly known as “Fish Magnet,” has sparked outrage, with notable public figures voicing their frustrations and fears over the worsening state of safety.

Among those speaking out is popular Nollywood actress Destiny Etiko, who took to social media to express her sorrow and call out the government over its failure to ensure the security of citizens. Her emotionally charged post captured the depth of her grief and the urgency of the situation.

Onyekere, a well-known figure in Anambra State’s business community, was reportedly abducted on Saturday, July 26. The news of his abduction sent shockwaves through his hometown, with many praying for his safe return. Sadly, those hopes were dashed when confirmation of his death emerged a few days later, leaving his family, friends, and community devastated.

Etiko, known for her outspoken nature and deep ties to the southeastern region, did not hold back as she mourned the businessman. Her post read more like a plea than a rant, a heartfelt cry for justice, safety, and change. She questioned the motive behind such a gruesome act, suggesting that his only "crime" was being hardworking and successful.

“What was his offense Bikonu? Because he decided to be useful to himself?” she lamented. “Some people are not human at all. Kidnapping and taking money from him wasn’t enough? Must you sniff life out of him?”

Her words echo the sentiments of many Nigerians who have grown weary of the constant threat of violence, particularly in regions once considered safe havens for business and community life. The killing of Onyekere is not an isolated incident but part of a disturbing pattern that continues to haunt the southeastern states.

Residents have repeatedly called on the authorities to take decisive action against criminal elements, but for many, those cries have fallen on deaf ears. The frustration has now reached a boiling point, with public figures like Etiko using their platforms to amplify the voices of the grieving and the fearful.

Etiko’s emotional post went on to address the anxiety and helplessness that such news brings. She spoke of how the tragedy had personally affected her, revealing that she had been struggling with anxiety since hearing the news.

“Honestly, I have been having anxiety since yesterday upon this devastating news,” she admitted. “Please our government should look into the security of our country. This tragedy is becoming a nightmare to us. We need maximum security in all the states, especially in the eastern part of Nigeria.”

Her message closed with a heartfelt tribute to the late businessman: “My heart is pained. RIP MY IGBO BROTHER.”

Onyekere, widely respected for his integrity and business acumen, was more than just a fish magnate. He symbolized the spirit of Igbo entrepreneurship and resilience, building a reputable brand in a sector often overlooked in national discourse. His death is not only a loss to his family but to the entire community that looked up to him.

Calls for improved security in the region have grown louder with each incident, but so far, they have been met with limited action. With celebrities and influencers now joining the conversation, there is renewed hope that the outcry will reach those in power.

The tragedy of Ifesinachi Onyekere serves as yet another painful reminder that no one is truly safe until the nation’s leadership takes security as a topmost priority. As mourners continue to pay tribute and share memories of the late businessman, the question on everyone’s lips remains the same: how many more must die before change finally comes?

Until there are real solutions, the people of the southeast and indeed the entire country will continue to live in fear, hoping that the next victim is not someone they know and love.
