Peter Obi Campaigns For Labour Party’s George Moghalu For Anambra Governor, Will Contest Presidency in 2027 [VIDEO]

The political landscape in Anambra State witnessed a significant shift on Friday as Mr. Peter Obi, former governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), formally introduced Dr. George Moghalu as the party’s governorship candidate for the November 8, 2025 election. The event, held in the bustling commercial city of Onitsha, was more than a campaign flag-off; it marked the beginning of LP’s strategic push toward both state and national victories.

A large crowd of party faithful, community leaders, traders, and political stakeholders gathered at the venue as Obi used the occasion not only to endorse Moghalu but also to publicly declare his intention to vie for the presidency again in 2027. His announcement, met with thunderous applause, underscored his sustained relevance in Nigeria’s political discourse.

During his address, Obi confidently reaffirmed his credentials and his appeal to Nigerians, stating that while every citizen had the right to contest, none of the current aspirants matched his track record or vision. “Let me remind you that I am contesting for President in 2027, and I am serious about it,” he said. “Everyone has the right to contest, but none of them has better credentials than I do.”

He further emphasized the strength of his political network, noting that senators, members of the House of Representatives, and other influential figures continue to stand firmly behind his vision for a restructured and empathetic Nigeria.

Shifting focus to Anambra’s gubernatorial race, Obi passionately advocated for Dr. George Moghalu’s candidacy, portraying him as a man of integrity, compassion, and competence. Obi stressed that the values which have long guided his own public service journey; empathy, accountability, and people-centered governance; are deeply ingrained in Moghalu’s approach to leadership.

“Governance for me is about empathy and compassion, about caring for the poor and petty traders, the same people the government taxes,” Obi remarked. “Dr. Moghalu is prepared to govern with those values in mind. I urge you to support him.”

He also used the opportunity to dismiss growing speculation suggesting that he had defected from the Labour Party to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Obi clarified that although LP and ADC are cooperating strategically ahead of the 2027 general election, his allegiance remains firmly with Labour.

“I remain a Labour Party member, as are all our members at both state and national levels. We are here today for this symbolic flag-off of the campaign for our LP flagbearer, Dr. George Moghalu,” he said, putting to rest rumors of a political shift.

Attention was also drawn to the Labour Party’s deputy governorship pick, Mrs. Ifeoma Okaro, who was described as a symbol of gender inclusion and family-centric leadership. Obi lauded her organizational skills and popularity among grassroots communities, stressing that her presence on the ticket further emphasizes the party’s commitment to inclusive and responsive governance.

“She is not only popular but organized,” Obi noted. “We believe her presence will further enhance our commitment to caring for families.”

Dr. Moghalu, addressing a visibly energized crowd, pledged to lead with transparency and dedication. Though he refrained from listing an exhaustive manifesto, he gave a clear sense of his priorities if elected. He promised to rebuild Anambra’s educational system, invest in infrastructure, support agricultural development, and govern with integrity.

“If we begin to list everything we plan to do, we’ll sleep here,” he joked. “But I can assure you that my deputy and I will serve Anambra with dedication and integrity. Children will return to school, roads will be built, agriculture will thrive, and we will not disappoint.”

He also assured the people that his administration would implement a tax system that is fair and humane. “People will pay taxes, but not with pestles,” he said lightheartedly, emphasizing that under his watch, the people of Anambra would not be oppressed or overburdened.

The event drew endorsements from prominent political figures, including Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and Senator Tony Nwonye (Anambra North), both of whom expressed confidence that the LP is well-positioned to clinch victory in the upcoming election.

As campaign activities gear up across the state, political analysts are watching closely to see whether the synergy between Obi’s national popularity and Moghalu’s grassroots appeal will translate into electoral success. The unfolding political dynamics suggest a pivotal moment not just for Anambra but potentially for Nigeria’s broader democratic trajectory.
