Update: Tragedy Strikes at Chisco Park Junction as Speeding Tipper Ploughs Through Crowd, Leaving Death and Chaos [VIDEOS]

A harrowing incident unfolded late Friday night at Chisco Park Junction in Amichi, Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra State, leaving a community stunned and grieving. A heavily loaded tipper truck reportedly lost control around 9:30 pm, crashing into a group of unsuspecting people going about their evening routines.

Eyewitnesses described the scene as horrifying and sudden. The tipper, which was said to be on high speed, rammed straight into a busy area where motorcyclists, street traders, passersby and even a child had gathered. The impact was so intense that many were thrown into the air while others were crushed on the spot.

Residents familiar with the area said that Chisco Park Junction is typically a hub of commercial activity at night. Vendors set up temporary stalls and petty traders spread their goods for customers coming back from work. On this particular evening, everything seemed normal until chaos erupted in seconds.

Available CCTV footage and several amateur video clips from eyewitnesses have since circulated online, showing the aftermath of the crash. Bodies were sprawled across the roadside while distressed onlookers rushed to help those who were still breathing. Wailing filled the air as rescuers, mostly fellow traders and motorists, tried to lift mangled motorcycles and carry unconscious victims to safety.

One of the videos showed a blood-stained little girl motionless on the ground. Another captured two commercial motorcyclists who had evidently been struck by the truck, their bodies lying beside their bikes. Several others, including elderly vendors and young pedestrians, were also seen badly injured or dead.

Locals suspect that brake failure may have been the cause of the incident. A survivor, who narrowly escaped the tragedy, said he noticed the tipper approaching at an unusual speed and swerving dangerously before crashing into the crowd. “I had just crossed to the other side of the road when I heard loud screams and then saw the truck plough into everything in its path. I don’t know how I escaped,” he recalled with trembling hands.

Despite multiple attempts by this reporter to reach the State Commandant of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), CC Nnennaya Alexander, no official statement had been made at the time this story was filed. A message sent to her, including the crash footage, had yet to receive a response.

RC Margaret Onabe, the spokesperson for the FRSC in Anambra State, acknowledged the inquiry and said she would follow up on the matter. However, no updates were provided before publication.

The silence from the authorities has left many residents frustrated. “Why is it so hard for the government to confirm such a tragedy?” asked a local youth leader who helped in the initial rescue effort. “This is not a time to play bureaucracy. People have died. Families are shattered.”

Emergency response teams were not immediately visible in the videos circulating online, further raising concerns about the speed and effectiveness of post-crash interventions in the state.

So far, the exact number of fatalities remains unclear. Some community members claim that at least eight people died on the spot, while others suggest the toll could be higher, considering the extent of injuries seen in the footage. Several victims were rushed to nearby hospitals, but the condition of many remains unknown.

This tragic accident adds to the growing list of preventable road mishaps in Nigeria, particularly involving heavy-duty vehicles with questionable maintenance records. Tipper trucks, often used for transporting construction materials, are frequently cited in accidents due to brake failure, overloading, and reckless driving.

At Chisco Park Junction, signs of the crash still linger, shattered goods, broken benches, and oil-stained asphalt. Heartbroken families and residents have started gathering at the scene, some lighting candles, others offering prayers for the dead and injured.

Calls for justice and improved road safety regulations have already begun circulating across social media platforms. Many are demanding that both the driver and the truck owner be held accountable if found negligent. Others are calling on the state government to install speed breakers and restrict the movement of tipper trucks in densely populated areas during peak hours.

Until authorities make an official announcement, the people of Amichi continue to mourn, waiting for answers and hoping for swift action to prevent such a catastrophe from happening again.
