Dr. George Moghalu Blasts Soludo’s “Street Urchins” Comment, Says Ndi Anambra Deserve Respect and Results

A political firestorm erupted in Anambra following comments made by Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo during a political gathering at Ekwulobia, where he reportedly described some citizens as “street urchins” and mocked any governorship aspirant pledging to serve just one term, suggesting they require “psychiatric examination.”

The remarks have drawn sharp condemnation from various quarters, most notably from the camp of Dr. George Moghalu, a leading gubernatorial contender. His campaign organization has issued a strong statement criticizing what it calls a “reckless and condescending” outburst that reflects poorly on the office of the governor.

The Moghalu Campaign Organization expressed dismay at what it sees as a growing pattern of arrogance from the governor, stating that rather than speak to the pressing concerns of Ndi Anambra, Soludo has resorted to name-calling and public mockery. According to the statement, such conduct is unbefitting of someone occupying the highest office in the state.

Referencing the Nigerian Constitution, Moghalu’s camp emphasized that serving a single term is not unconstitutional. On the contrary, it is a valid democratic choice, rooted in principle and performance. They pointed to historical figures such as Nelson Mandela, who earned global respect after serving only one term as President of South Africa.

Three years into Soludo’s administration, the campaign team says Ndi Anambra are still waiting for the “Africa Dubai Taiwan” transformation he promised during his election campaign. They challenge the governor to name a single major foreign investment secured under his tenure, or to show tangible improvements in key sectors such as health, education, security, and job creation.

The group also raised concerns over rising insecurity in the state, particularly in the capital, where reports of kidnappings and killings have caused fear among residents. These, they say, are the real issues the governor should be addressing instead of attacking political opponents or ridiculing voters.

Dr. Moghalu’s team described the governor’s tone as one filled with panic and desperation, suggesting that his remarks reveal a fear of competition and accountability. For someone who previously claimed not to be in a race with anyone, they questioned why Soludo now feels the need to belittle other candidates and mock citizens.

They urged Soludo to reflect on the legacies of iconic Anambra leaders like Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Prof. Chinua Achebe, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, and Rt. Hon. Nwafor Orizu. These were men, they argue, who led with vision, humility, and respect for the people. By contrast, the statement laments that today’s leadership is fast turning governance into a theater of insults and grandstanding.

The campaign went further to describe Governor Soludo’s recent comments as a betrayal of Anambra’s political heritage. They stated that such behavior discredits the dignity and expectations that come with public service, especially in a state known for producing distinguished leaders in national and global affairs.

Dr. George Moghalu, who has pledged to serve only one term if elected, positions this decision not as a sign of political weakness, but as a firm commitment to zoning, equity, and measurable performance. According to his team, Moghalu’s approach reflects the kind of leadership Anambra needs at this point in its democratic journey.

They argue that four years is sufficient time for a focused and competent leader to lay down the foundation for transformation and deliver meaningful progress. Citing his experience in both public administration and the private sector, they assure Ndi Anambra that Dr. Moghalu has the vision, discipline, and credibility to lead effectively.

As the November 8 gubernatorial election approaches, the campaign urged the people to reflect on the kind of leadership they want for the future. They framed the choice as one between “careless arrogance” and “thoughtful leadership,” between “broken promises” and “a credible plan for recovery.”

In closing, the campaign reaffirmed Dr. Moghalu’s commitment to running a dignified and issue-based campaign. While others may resort to personal attacks, they say he will continue to focus on the hopes and struggles of Ndi Anambra and offer clear, respectful solutions to the state’s many challenges.
