BBNaija reality TV personality and fitness enthusiast, Tuoyo Ideh, has come forward with shocking claims of assault and brutality by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) following his arrest during a late-night raid at Proxy Nightclub, Victoria Island, Lagos. The incident, which reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday, October 26, has drawn significant public attention as Tuoyo shared disturbing details of his experience.
According to Tuoyo, he was at the club for professional reasons, working as a promoter and helping clients secure tables when chaos erupted. He said the peaceful atmosphere was suddenly shattered when NDLEA officials, accompanied by heavily armed military personnel, stormed the venue without warning. The reality star recounted how patrons were ordered to the ground as officers began seizing personal belongings, including phones, wallets, and other items.
Tuoyo revealed that he had barely spent thirty minutes inside the club when the incident occurred. “I’m a promoter, I go out for business, to help clients and clubs with promotions. That night, I was just doing my job when suddenly, people in black uniforms and soldiers entered. They told everyone to go down and started taking our phones. They searched me thoroughly, even down to my socks, but found nothing illegal,” he said.
The entertainer described the experience as humiliating and traumatic. He claimed that after being searched, he and other patrons were taken outside and made to sit on the ground around 3 a.m. He said the officers kept them there for hours under harsh treatment. “We were ordered to sit on the floor; it was embarrassing and degrading. I was just trying to cooperate when one woman among them suddenly pointed at me. Before I knew it, about five men rushed at me. They started slapping and beating me, one of them said ‘Na you go post abi? Shoot him.’ I was shocked and terrified,” Tuoyo recounted.
According to him, the officers hit him with sticks, kicked him repeatedly, and continued assaulting him while he struggled to breathe. He expressed disbelief at the level of violence meted out to him despite having no contraband or illicit substance on him. “I have never been beaten like that in my life,” he said. “I was rolling on the ground trying to catch my breath. I thought they were going to kill me.”
The reality star emphasized that he was merely carrying out his duties as a promoter that night, not engaging in any unlawful activity. His account aligns with other reports suggesting that over one hundred clubgoers were apprehended during the raid, including well-known Lagos socialite, Pretty Mike. Most of those arrested were reportedly taken into NDLEA custody for screening and questioning before being released later.
Tuoyo’s video statement, posted on social media on Monday night, has sparked conversations about the conduct of law enforcement agencies during raids. Many Nigerians have expressed outrage, calling for transparency and accountability from the NDLEA. Social media users have also criticized the reported collaboration between NDLEA officials and military personnel, arguing that such joint operations often result in excessive use of force.
Observers have urged the agency to issue an official statement addressing the allegations, particularly given Tuoyo’s prominence and the seriousness of his claims. Some fans have demanded that the NDLEA release CCTV footage from the club to clarify what transpired and determine whether the use of force was justified.
Human rights advocates have also weighed in, condemning what they described as the “systemic normalization of brutality” during public raids. According to them, the NDLEA’s approach to enforcement must prioritize respect for human dignity and lawful procedures. They argue that such actions, if unchecked, could erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
As of Wednesday, the NDLEA has not issued a detailed response to the allegations. Attempts to reach the agency’s spokesperson for comment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, Tuoyo has assured fans that he is recovering from the physical injuries sustained during the ordeal but maintained that the emotional trauma remains fresh.
He vowed to pursue justice, calling on relevant authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. “What happened to me was wrong. I wasn’t doing anything illegal. They should not treat people like that. I will make sure my voice is heard,” he declared.
The incident has once again brought to light the ongoing debate surrounding the tactics used by Nigerian law enforcement agencies during raids. Citizens are demanding a more humane approach that upholds the rule of law and respects the rights of innocent individuals. As investigations continue, many Nigerians are closely watching to see how the NDLEA handles the matter and whether any disciplinary measures will follow.
