ADC Accuses President Tinubu of Reckless Borrowing After Federal Government Approves Fresh ₦1.15 Trillion Loan Request

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has strongly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it describes as an addiction to debt, following the Federal Government’s approval of a fresh ₦1.15 trillion domestic loan. The party accused the administration of fiscal recklessness and policy inconsistency, arguing that the government continues to accumulate debt even while claiming impressive revenue achievements.

ADC’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, condemned the move in a statement shared with Naija News, highlighting what the party called “contradictions and dangerous fiscal trajectory” under Tinubu’s leadership. The statement noted that despite claims that Nigeria met its non-oil revenue targets, reportedly generating N20.59 trillion in just the first eight months of 2025, the administration continues to borrow at unprecedented levels, placing the nation’s financial stability at risk.

According to the party, if all of the administration’s 2025 loan requests are approved, Nigeria’s total public debt could reach N193 trillion, an increase of N40.61 trillion from the current N152.4 trillion. The Debt Management Office reports that as of June 30, 2025, domestic debt stood at N80.55 trillion while external liabilities totaled N71.85 trillion. ADC characterized this borrowing pattern as “reckless debt accumulation wrapped in propaganda,” noting that it undermines public trust and economic credibility.

The party also criticized the APC-led National Assembly for facilitating these loans despite the everyday struggles of Nigerians facing rising inflation and cost of living. While the administration has reported headline inflation at 18.02 percent and food inflation at 16.87 percent as of September 2025, ADC emphasized that ordinary Nigerians are not seeing tangible relief. Open markets and daily expenses, the party argued, reflect the reality of economic suffocation rather than statistical improvement.

ADC called on President Tinubu to provide full transparency on government revenues and borrowing activities. The party urged immediate action, including a freeze on non-critical loan approvals, publication of all 2025 revenue inflows and debt disbursements, independent verification of non-oil revenue claims, and the establishment of a legally binding debt ceiling to prevent further fiscal abuse.

“President Tinubu cannot claim economic stability while continuing to borrow extensively,” the statement read. “We cannot borrow our way out of a crisis fueled by economic incompetence. Nigerians are watching as their collective future is mortgaged.” ADC’s statement serves as a stern warning to the government, civil society, and the international financial community to demand accountability and safeguard the nation’s fiscal health.
