A tense silence hangs heavy over Isapa, a once peaceful community in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, after a coordinated attack by armed bandits shattered the stillness of night and plunged residents into fear. Reports from locals reveal that between twenty and thirty gunmen descended on the area, moving alongside a large herd of cattle while unleashing sporadic gunfire that sent villagers running for safety.

A dramatic escalation unfolded as the invaders swept through the settlement with alarming confidence, forcing doors open and dragging several people into the surrounding bush paths. Among those taken were a pregnant woman, ten children, two nursing mothers and other vulnerable residents who had no time to flee before being overpowered. The confusion and chaos left behind have deepened the trauma of a community that has repeatedly endured violent incursions.

A distressing account from a local leader confirmed that eleven individuals were abducted, with seven of them belonging to one extended family. The list of victims reflects the indiscriminate nature of the attack, capturing a broad spectrum of residents who found themselves at the mercy of the heavily armed group. Those confirmed kidnapped include Talatu Kabiru, Magaji, Kande, Hadiza, Mariam, Saima, Habibat who is a housewife, Fatima Yusufu who is also a housewife, Sarah Sunday who is pregnant, Lami Fidelis who is a nursing mother, and Haja Na Allah.

A stray bullet from the gunmen reportedly struck an elderly woman during the onslaught, heightening concerns about the recklessness and brutality displayed by the attackers. While details of her condition remain unclear, the incident has further intensified anxiety among residents who now fear additional raids.

A wave of fear continued to sweep through the community as the attackers retreated through bush paths linking Eruku to nearby settlements. Their escape route has raised questions about the porous nature of the region’s forest corridors which have become notorious hideouts and transit points for bandits moving between states.

A sharp sense of déjà vu weighs heavily on families who recall that barely two weeks earlier, bandits targeted the Christ Apostolic Church where thirty eight worshippers were kidnapped and others lost their lives during the assault. Relief eventually came when all thirty eight captives were reportedly rescued, though the scars of the tragedy remain fresh.

A growing demand for security reinforcements echoes across Ekiti Local Government Area as residents grapple with fear and uncertainty. Many believe the latest attack underscores an urgent need for stronger surveillance, quicker emergency response and a more coordinated effort to dismantle criminal networks operating along the region’s forest boundaries.
