A deadly ambush in Bauchi State has claimed the lives of five police officers while leaving two others critically injured, authorities confirmed. The tragic incident unfolded on November 22, 2025, in Sabon Sara village, Darazo Local Government Area, during a visibility patrol aimed at curbing farmer-herder conflicts in the region.
CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, spokesperson for the Bauchi State Police Command, disclosed in a statement on November 23 that combined tactical units were targeted by unidentified Fulani youths. The patrol team included officers from the Rapid Response Squad, 10 PMF Bauchi, the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, and the State Intelligence Department. According to Wakil, intelligence from a Good Samaritan alerted the command of the ambush, allowing rapid response reinforcements to be deployed, although the attackers inflicted devastating casualties before being partially neutralized.
“The ambush resulted in the death of five of our brave officers and left two others injured. Several of the assailants were neutralized during the engagement,” CSP Wakil said, emphasizing the commitment of the command to restoring law and order in affected communities.
The officers who lost their lives in the attack were DSP Ahmad Muhammad of the State Intelligence Department, ASP Mustapha Muhammad of 10 PMF, Inspector Amarhel Yunusa of 10 PMF, Inspector Idris Ahmed of 10 PMF, and Corporal Isah Muazu of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit. Injured personnel include Inspector Isah Musa and Inspector Yusuf Gambo, both of the State Intelligence Department, who were evacuated to Darazo General Hospital for treatment.
SP Auwalu Ilu, Divisional Police Officer of the area, personally led a team of reinforcements to the scene. He oversaw the rescue and evacuation of both the deceased and the injured officers, ensuring immediate medical attention and proper handling of the deceased at the morgue.
Authorities confirmed that ongoing efforts are being made to apprehend the perpetrators. The Bauchi State Police Command vowed to pursue justice for the slain officers, highlighting the intensity and dangers of operations aimed at mitigating farmer-herder clashes.
Commissioner of Police CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the scene, offering condolences to the families of the deceased officers. He assured the public that the command remains resolute in its duty to protect lives and property, emphasizing that the police will continue to act with courage and determination in the face of criminal threats.
CSP Wakil noted that the incident underscores the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel in regions prone to violent conflicts but reaffirmed the force’s commitment to fighting criminal elements while protecting law-abiding citizens. The tragic ambush has drawn attention to the urgent need for coordinated strategies to prevent future clashes between herders and local communities, and authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
