Legal counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has publicly asserted that the Nigerian system has been consistently biased against the IPOB leader, painting a picture of systemic challenges since 2021. Ejimakor made these claims during a Monday interview on ‘The Morning Brief,’ a programme aired on Channels Television, following the recent court ruling that sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment.
Ejimakor explained that from 2021, the legal and political environment appeared heavily stacked against Kanu, indicating that forces within the system were determined to hinder his actions and leadership. According to him, the most telling moment of this systemic opposition occurred in June 2021, when Kanu was renditioned from Kenya in a manner he described as a violation of both international law and the domestic laws of Nigeria and Kenya.
The lawyer emphasized that this incident underscored a broader pattern of what he called the government’s desperation to target Kanu and suppress the activities of IPOB. “The entire system seemed to be against him and against what he was doing. The desperation of the system was evident in June 2021 when he was renditioned in breach of all canon of international law and laws of Nigeria and laws of Kenya,” Ejimakor said.
Highlighting the gravity of Kanu’s legal battle, Ejimakor remarked that the court case had always been a formidable challenge. He suggested that while the recent life imprisonment verdict may have surprised some, those closely involved in the case were not taken aback. According to him, the complexities surrounding the case and the evident determination of the authorities made it exceptionally difficult to secure a favorable outcome.
Ejimakor also pointed to the perceived relentlessness of the government in pursuing Kanu, stating that all available means were seemingly employed to ensure that the IPOB leader faced severe punishment. He characterized the recent sentence as the culmination of a broader effort to undermine Kanu’s leadership and activities, which supporters view as political and legal suppression.
The life imprisonment sentence has sparked significant debate across Nigeria, with human rights advocates, political commentators, and members of the international community weighing in on the fairness of the trial process. Ejimakor’s comments add to this narrative, framing the case as one where structural biases and institutional pressures played a decisive role in determining the outcome.
While the court ruling marks a critical moment in the saga of Nnamdi Kanu and IPOB, Ejimakor’s perspective underscores the ongoing tensions between the group and the Nigerian state. The lawyer’s statements suggest that this is not merely a matter of legal interpretation but a reflection of broader systemic issues that have long influenced the trajectory of Kanu’s political and legal journey.
The developments continue to fuel discussions about justice, governance, and human rights in Nigeria, as observers analyze how legal frameworks, political considerations, and institutional behavior converge to shape the fate of prominent figures like Kanu.
