Catholic Bishops in Nigeria have raised serious concerns over the response of security agencies to attacks on predominantly Christian communities, warning that delays or withheld interventions have created perceptions of collusion. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) issued a statement on Tuesday detailing the alarming security situation, as well as addressing claims of a Christian “genocide” that the federal government has consistently rejected.
The bishops reported receiving numerous disturbing accounts of slow or absent security responses to incidents of violence in Northern and middle belt regions, where repeated attacks have left communities devastated. The statement emphasized that the label of genocide emerged from the prolonged nature of these attacks and the significant loss of Christian lives.
“Several communities have experienced repeated and brutal attacks, resulting in heavy casualties and the tragic loss of life,” the statement read. “In certain cases, delayed or withheld responses from security forces have given the impression of possible collusion or a lack of willingness to act.” The clerics stressed that the destruction of entire communities and continued assaults on displaced persons have intensified feelings of abandonment and despair among affected populations.
Although highlighting the plight of Christian communities, the bishops also acknowledged that Muslims and individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds have suffered similar violence. They urged Nigerians to remember the shared humanity of all citizens and the sacred dignity inherent in every life.
The CBCN appealed to the federal government to thoroughly investigate allegations of delayed or absent security responses, stressing that such actions are crucial for rebuilding public trust. The statement further called for decisive action to bring perpetrators of recent kidnappings in Kebbi, Kwara, Borno, and Niger states to justice.
“The near-total destruction and occupation of some communities, along with attacks on displaced persons even in camps, have deepened a sense of despair and abandonment,” the bishops added. They stressed that addressing these security gaps is essential to restoring hope and preventing further deterioration of communal trust.
The clerics’ statement comes amid growing frustration among citizens over the perceived inability or unwillingness of security forces to protect vulnerable communities. By highlighting both the failures in response and the broader humanitarian impact, the bishops have positioned themselves as advocates for justice and accountability while urging a balanced recognition of suffering across religious and ethnic divides.
With repeated attacks continuing in several regions, the CBCN’s call for urgent government action underscores the urgent need for effective protection, transparent investigations, and restorative measures to prevent further loss of life and rebuild confidence in state institutions. The statement concludes with a reminder that safeguarding human dignity and promoting justice remain fundamental responsibilities for all authorities and citizens alike.
