A Nigerian woman, Chisom Okonkwo, aged 29, has been arraigned before an Enugu Magistrate Court for allegedly making false claims that her husband, Ozioma Okonkwo, sexually abused their two young daughters. The charges, which have drawn public attention, center on claims of defamation and providing false information to law enforcement officers.
The charge sheet filed by the Commissioner of Police indicates that the alleged offences occurred in August 2024 at Adoration Junction, opposite Dan-Legal Hotel, Emene, Enugu State. Authorities stated that Chisom publicly accused her husband of sexually assaulting their daughters, which the police say subjected him to hatred, ridicule, and contempt, causing severe damage to his reputation.
The case cites violations under Section 323, punishable under Section 325 of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004. Investigations by the police revealed that Ozioma Okonkwo was arrested on October 25, 2025, after Chisom made allegations of sexual abuse against their children, who were aged 2 and 5 at the time. Subsequent medical examinations, however, found no evidence of abuse, prompting his release from custody.
A second count in the charge sheet accuses Chisom of deliberately misleading detectives at the State Intelligence Department (SID) in Enugu on October 27, 2025. Police allege that she knowingly provided false information, resulting in her husband’s wrongful arrest and detention. This charge falls under Section 154(1)(a) & (b) of the Criminal Code, Cap 30, Vol. II, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004.
Legal experts say that providing false information to authorities is a serious offence that can lead to significant penalties, especially when it causes another person to be wrongfully detained. The case has reignited discussions about the consequences of false accusations within families and the importance of thorough investigations before arrests are made.
Chisom Okonkwo’s plea to the charges, whether she has been granted bail, and further court proceedings have not been disclosed publicly. Court watchers and members of the public remain attentive, noting that the outcome could have significant implications for how allegations of this nature are handled in Enugu State and across Nigeria.
The matter highlights the delicate balance law enforcement must maintain in addressing claims of abuse while ensuring the rights of those accused are protected. Observers continue to emphasize the need for responsible reporting and the dangers posed by false allegations, particularly in domestic and family contexts.
