Nigerian priest Rev. Fr. Edward Daniang Daleng, OSA has been named Vice Regent of the Prefecture of the Papal Household by Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant milestone for the African clergy in the Vatican. The appointment places Fr. Daniang at the heart of Vatican operations responsible for orchestrating papal audiences, official ceremonies, and major events involving the Holy Father.
The Prefecture of the Papal Household holds a critical role within the Vatican, overseeing the coordination of papal liturgies, spiritual retreats for the Pope, and meetings of the College of Cardinals and the Roman Curia. The office also manages arrangements for papal visits within Rome and across Italy, ensuring that every official engagement reflects the dignity and tradition of the Holy See.
Fr. Daniang, a dedicated member of the Order of St. Augustine, has had a distinguished career within the Augustinian order. Before this appointment, he served as General Councilor and later as Procurator General, where he managed the order’s official relations with the Holy See. His administrative experience and close ties to the Vatican positioned him as a natural choice for this prominent role.
Born on April 4, 1977, in Yitla’ar, Kwalla, Plateau State, Nigeria, Fr. Daniang joined the Augustinians in 2001, making his solemn profession in 2004 and receiving ordination in 2005. He pursued advanced theological studies in Rome, earning a doctorate in Moral Theology from the Pontifical Alphonsian Academy. His doctoral dissertation focused on the dignity and care of patients with terminal illnesses, reflecting a deep commitment to both ethical reflection and pastoral care.
Fr. Daniang first encountered Pope Leo in 2001 during a visit to Nigeria by then–Father Robert Prevost, Prior General of the Augustinians. Their initial meeting laid the foundation for a lasting friendship that strengthened after Daniang relocated to Rome in 2002. Over the years, their bond grew, with Fr. Daniang describing Pope Leo as a humble and simple man who holds a profound affection for Africa. He recalled that Pope Leo, during his tenure as Prior General, visited Nigeria on at least ten occasions, demonstrating his enduring connection to the continent.
The appointment of a Nigerian priest to such a high-ranking Vatican office underscores the increasing recognition of African clergy in global Catholic leadership. Observers note that Fr. Daniang’s deep theological knowledge, combined with extensive administrative experience, makes him exceptionally well-equipped to manage the complex responsibilities of the Prefecture. Vatican insiders describe his elevation as both a testament to his personal dedication and a symbol of growing diversity within the Church hierarchy.
Fr. Daniang’s new role will involve coordinating intricate ceremonies, liaising with international delegations, and ensuring the smooth execution of papal engagements. His presence in the Prefecture of the Papal Household is expected to bring fresh perspectives and reaffirm the Vatican’s commitment to inclusivity while maintaining the sacred traditions of the Holy See.
