Former Bayelsa State Governor and serving Senator, Seriake Dickson, has thrown his weight behind former United States President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding mass killings and terrorist violence in Nigeria. Describing Trump’s remarks as a much-needed “wake-up call,” the lawmaker stressed that while Nigeria’s sovereignty remains sacrosanct, the country must be willing to accept international collaboration to confront the deepening wave of terrorism.
The senator’s statement, titled “Alleged Genocide: My Stance On President Trump’s Statement,” was released on Thursday, capturing his views on the ongoing crisis that continues to destabilize large parts of the country. He emphasized that the era of complacency must end if Nigeria is to reclaim its territorial integrity and ensure safety for its citizens.
According to Senator Dickson, respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and national institutions is non-negotiable, but collaboration with friendly nations is equally indispensable. He argued that the fight against terrorism had gone beyond the capacity of one nation alone and required global partnership. “I wish to state, firstly, that Nigeria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national institutions must be respected by all. At the same time, I fully support any collaborative action aimed at eradicating the murderous bands of terrorists who have wantonly slaughtered thousands of our countrymen and women,” he said.
For nearly fifteen years, Nigeria has grappled with the relentless menace of extremist groups including Boko Haram, ISWAP, ISIS, and al-Qaeda affiliates. Dickson lamented that these groups had inflicted unimaginable suffering, introducing suicide bombings and spreading their violent ideology from Borno State across much of the northeast and beyond. Communities, schools, and places of worship have been targets, with both Christians and Muslims paying the price for a conflict that appears to have no end in sight.
The senator expressed particular concern over the unresolved fates of several abducted schoolgirls, including Leah Sharibu and the remaining Chibok girls. He described their continued captivity as a national embarrassment and a moral failure. “Till today, Nigeria has not fully accounted for the whereabouts of many of these students — for instance, Leah Sharibu and some Chibok girls remain missing,” he said sorrowfully.
Beyond abductions, Dickson noted that terrorist factions still control parts of northern Nigeria, imposing illegal taxes and operating parallel administrations in states such as Borno, Zamfara, and Katsina. He warned that this reality represents a direct affront to Nigeria’s sovereignty, which must no longer be tolerated. “President Trump’s statement is a wake-up call to action,” he added, noting that continued silence and inaction would only embolden the perpetrators.
The lawmaker disclosed that the Nigerian Senate has repeatedly discussed the worsening security situation. He revealed that hardly a week passes without senators raising reports of massacres or attacks across various constituencies. Recently, the Senate proposed a National Security Summit and mandated its leadership to liaise with the presidency toward forming a non-partisan delegation to Washington D.C. for consultations on strengthening cooperation with international partners.
Dickson did not spare past administrations in his assessment. He criticized the former government of President Muhammadu Buhari for deepening divisions through its security appointments, which he claimed worsened public perception and fostered distrust among Nigerians. “Late President Buhari’s policy of appointing mostly Muslims to head all the security services during his eight years in office further worsened these perceptions,” he remarked.
The senator urged the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt a more pragmatic and inclusive approach. He called for stronger collaboration with Donald Trump, the United States government, and other allies to decisively eliminate terrorist groups and restore lasting stability. “We need help! No nation can confront terrorism in isolation,” he stated firmly.
Dickson also drew attention to Nigeria’s weakened diplomatic presence, describing the prolonged delay in ambassadorial appointments as a major setback. He appealed to the government to urgently fill those positions to enable the country to harness its diplomatic influence and strategic alliances more effectively.
As the global community reacts to Trump’s controversial threat to conduct military operations in Nigeria and label the nation as one of “Particular Concern,” Dickson’s position introduces a nuanced voice within Nigeria’s political landscape — one that balances national pride with pragmatic realism. His concluding prayer, “May God help Nigeria,” reflects a sentiment shared by millions who continue to hope for a nation free from the grip of terrorism and violence.
