Armed gunmen launched a violent attack on the convoy of former Anambra State Governor Chris Ngige along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road, in Idemili North Local Government Area. While the former governor was not present in the convoy during the assault, the attack left a woman dead and several others wounded, causing widespread shock in the area.
According to a statement issued by Ngige’s former media aide, Sir Fred Chukwuelobe, the assailants appeared to be disguised in police and army uniforms, adding an alarming dimension to the incident. A policeman assigned to the pilot car was shot, and the attackers seized his firearm and uniform before fleeing the scene.
The chaos unfolded as a woman, who had been recording the attack on her mobile phone, was fatally shot. Eyewitnesses described a scene of panic as bullets tore through the convoy, leaving people scrambling for safety. A nearby shop owner, who had rushed to the scene to investigate the commotion, was also shot but miraculously survived. He reportedly lost a significant amount of blood but is scheduled for surgery to remove the bullets and is expected to recover fully. Thankfully, none of the bullets lodged in his spine.
The pilot car carrying the security detail was heavily damaged, riddled with bullets, highlighting the intensity of the attack. The escort leader sustained gunshot injuries and has undergone surgery. Medical officials have confirmed that he is stable and on track to make a complete recovery.
Chukwuelobe emphasized that Dr. Ngige was promptly informed of the attack and is taking all necessary steps to ensure adequate medical care for the injured. He expressed condolences to the family of the woman who lost her life while recording the incident, describing the situation as tragic and senseless.
Residents and bystanders recounted the terrifying moments when the gunmen stormed the convoy, noting the swift and coordinated nature of the attack. Security experts have raised concerns about the increasing sophistication of such assaults, particularly when perpetrators impersonate law enforcement officers.
The Anambra State Police have yet to release an official statement regarding the attack, leaving many questions about the perpetrators’ identities and motives unanswered. Local authorities have reportedly increased security along the affected route, and investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible.
The incident has sparked renewed debate about convoy security for public figures in the region and the growing threat posed by armed gangs operating with apparent impunity. Authorities have assured residents that heightened measures will be implemented to prevent similar attacks in the future.
