Bayer Leverkusen striker Victor Boniface has opened up about his journey with the Nigerian national football team, the Super Eagles, describing it as both fulfilling and challenging. The forward, who is currently on loan at Werder Bremen for the 2025/2026 season, said he remains grateful for the opportunity to represent his country despite not achieving the level of success he had envisioned.
The Nigerian international, who spoke candidly in an interview with sports journalist Oma Akatugba, admitted that his performances in the national team have been met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts. However, he stressed that his passion and commitment to the green and white jersey have never been in doubt. According to him, even though he has struggled to find the back of the net consistently for the Super Eagles, his dedication to the team remains unwavering.
Victor Boniface revealed that wearing the national colors was a dream he had nurtured since childhood, and the experience of stepping onto the pitch for Nigeria still fills him with pride. The 24-year-old striker noted that footballers often face unpredictable moments in their careers, and while he may not have delivered the goals many expected, he refuses to define himself by a few challenging games.
“I have been unlucky with the national team in terms of scoring goals, even though there were a couple of games I was not good,” Boniface said. “My biggest dream as a football player was to represent my country and I achieved this and I am grateful for this. Because it has not worked good for me with the national team does not mean I am a bad player.”
He maintained that setbacks are part of the journey of every footballer and that he remains confident in his abilities to deliver for club and country. Boniface, who was part of the Super Eagles setup in several international fixtures, emphasized that criticism will not deter him from giving his best whenever he is called upon to represent Nigeria.
The conversation also touched on his club career and transfer developments. Boniface was linked with a potential move to AC Milan earlier in the transfer window, but the deal eventually did not materialize. The striker, however, said he bore no disappointment about how events unfolded. According to him, transfers come and go, and he has learned to accept such changes in stride.
“When the Milan deal didn’t go through, I was just relaxing with my friends. Things like that happen in football all the time,” he explained. “I love Germany. I really do.”
Boniface, who battled a lengthy injury spell last season, also dismissed suggestions that his performance was below expectations. Despite missing several months of action, he still managed to score eight goals and contribute significantly to his team’s campaign. “I missed a lot of games but still scored eight goals. I don’t understand how that became a bad season,” he said confidently.
The striker reflected on his personal journey, describing it as one marked by perseverance, faith, and resilience. Having grown up in humble circumstances, Boniface said he remains thankful for how far he has come in his career. “I came from humble beginnings. I’ve faced tough injuries that could have ended my career, so every day I’m thankful to God. Being here is already a blessing,” he said.
Addressing the criticisms surrounding his social media activities, Boniface clarified that his online posts are simply an outlet for humor and self-expression. He stated that people often read too much meaning into his posts. “I just post funny things. If people make it into a big issue, that’s their choice. My posts don’t hurt anyone,” he explained. “When I stopped posting, they said I must be going through something. When I post, they still complain.”
Boniface spoke warmly about his current experience in Germany, highlighting the comfort and sense of belonging he feels in the Bundesliga environment. According to him, the relationship between him and the fans in Germany goes beyond football, creating an atmosphere that feels like home. “We have a good connection here. It feels like home,” he said.
Despite receiving offers from other European clubs, including some from England, Boniface made it clear that his focus remains on continuing his growth and success in Germany. “I had offers from other countries, even from England, but I chose to stay in Germany. I love it here and I want to make the fans proud,” he concluded.
The Nigerian forward’s reflections reveal a footballer who has embraced both the highs and lows of his career with humility and gratitude. As he continues his spell at Werder Bremen, fans will be hoping that his resilience and passion translate into more goals and greater impact both in the Bundesliga and for the Super Eagles.
