Anambra Government Launches ‘Operation Clear Your Waterways’ to Combat Flooding

In a bold move to prevent devastating floods and safeguard public health, the Anambra State Government has announced the launch of a statewide enforcement campaign, "Operation Clear Your Waterways." The initiative, set to commence on March 31, 2025, is aimed at ensuring the free flow of water channels across the state ahead of the rainy season.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odimegwu, made this known in a statement on Tuesday, March 18, emphasizing that the enforcement aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision to transform Anambra into a modern, flood-resilient mega city. The campaign will be implemented in accordance with the Public Health Law, Drainage Management Policy, and Environmental Protection Laws of the state.

A Timely Response to Heavy Rainfall Predictions

The initiative follows the 2025 weather forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), which identified Anambra as one of the states expected to experience early and intense rainfall. Given this prediction, the government has taken a proactive stance to mitigate potential flooding and its associated dangers, including the displacement of residents, destruction of property, and the spread of waterborne diseases.

Strict Measures: Zero Tolerance for Blocked Drainages

Dr. Odimegwu stressed that the state has adopted a zero-tolerance policy for clogged or obstructed drainage systems. To this effect, he called on residents, business owners, religious institutions, and community groups to take immediate action in clearing their surroundings.

“We are calling on all stakeholders—landlord associations, market unions, schools, churches, abattoirs, shopping malls, motor parks, streets, and neighborhoods—to embark on massive clearing and desilting of drainage systems in their areas. This is not optional; it is a necessity,” Odimegwu warned.

He further explained that while desilting drains is crucial, it is equally important to ensure that the removed debris is completely evacuated. Leaving piles of waste along the roads can lead to secondary blockages, defeating the entire purpose of the exercise.

Enforcement, Prosecution, and Heavy Penalties Await Defaulters

The Commissioner made it clear that non-compliance will not be tolerated. Government officials will conduct strict enforcement operations, and those found violating the directive will face severe penalties, including prosecution and fines.

“Residents must understand that blocked drainages pose a major threat to lives and properties. We will enforce these rules to protect Anambra from disaster. Those who refuse to comply will face serious consequences,” he warned.

The state government is determined to make Anambra a model of environmental responsibility and urban sustainability. By tackling flooding head-on, the administration aims to prevent displacement, reduce economic losses, and safeguard public health.

A Collective Effort for a Safer Anambra

Dr. Odimegwu encouraged all residents to treat this initiative as a shared responsibility, noting that the fight against flooding requires collective effort.

“Flooding is a challenge that affects everyone. If we all take action now, we can prevent a crisis before it happens. Together, we can create a cleaner, healthier, and safer Anambra State,” he concluded.

As the March 31 enforcement date approaches, residents are urged to take immediate steps to clear their surroundings and ensure compliance. The government remains firm in its stance—there will be no room for negligence.

With Operation Clear Your Waterways, Anambra State is taking a decisive step toward mitigating flood risks and fostering a sustainable, livable environment for all.
