In a country where solid waste management has become a major concern, Blessing, a recent graduate of Moat Academy’s prestigious coding bootcamp, is on a mission to transform the way waste is handled in Nigeria. Leveraging his newly acquired software development skills, he has created an innovative web application that has the potential to not only tackle the country’s waste management issues but also bring economic benefits to its citizens.
Blessing’s application, Eco Earn, is an intelligent solution designed to address the inefficiencies in Nigeria’s waste management system. Despite Nigeria being ranked 105th out of 180 countries in the 2024 Environmental Performance Index, with a concerning score of 27 out of 100, the country still struggles to manage the growing amount of solid waste effectively. This has had devastating effects on both human health and the environment.
What sets Eco Earn apart is its ability to engage the public in waste management through an incentive-based system. The platform incentivizes citizens to separate and gather their waste, offering rewards in exchange for their efforts. Waste is then collected by registered waste agents, referred to as collectors, who transport it to recycling companies. These companies, in turn, profit from the materials, creating an ecosystem where everyone benefits. The system is simple yet effective, with the added bonus of contributing to environmental sustainability.
Eco Earn is structured in a way that allows for easy interaction between users and waste collectors, with the application’s backend managed by an admin panel. This backend, designed by Blessing using a combination of HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, JavaScript, JQuery, and PHP OOP, enables the admin to manage activities such as setting prices, monitoring waste collection, and generating detailed reports. The user-friendly interface makes it easy for anyone, regardless of technical background, to navigate.
The potential for Eco Earn to create tangible change is immense. According to the Managing Director of Pioneer Waste Master Limited, Nigeria’s waste management sector holds an untapped market worth $250 billion. With a rapidly growing population and increasing urbanization, the country faces a daunting challenge in handling its waste. Eco Earn is poised to make a significant impact by not only improving waste collection but also generating new income streams for individuals and waste management companies alike.
Since launching the application, Blessing has been on a mission to promote Eco Earn and engage local communities, hoping to inspire widespread adoption. However, his journey does not end here. With his recent success, Blessing has secured a spot as a developer on the team of one of Nigeria’s leading commercial banks, further cementing his place as a rising star in the software development industry.
Blessing’s success story is a testament to the value of Moat Academy’s coding bootcamp, which has become a springboard for many young Nigerians eager to break into the tech industry. Through its immersive, 13-week program, Moat Academy offers comprehensive training in software development, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in the fast-paced tech world. Students are trained in key technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP, as well as backend programming and database management, making them highly sought after by employers in the industry.
In 2024 alone, several graduates from Moat Academy have gone on to secure positions at prominent companies, further solidifying the academy’s reputation as a leader in tech education. Among them are Abdulrahman Adegeye, now a software engineer at Uniswitch; Chukwuma Ike, a full-stack developer at KPIE; Efemezino Oyibo, a frontend developer at Agroye; Jimoh Rukayat, a software developer at Uniswitch; and Joshua Taiwo, a frontend web developer at CLIQup.
Other successful Moat Academy graduates include Momodu Wealth, now a full-stack engineer at Omni Channel; Oluwatobi Olakunle, a software architect at Stanbic IBTC; Racheal Agu, a web developer at Dorisa Technologies; Opeoluwa Akinuliola, a full-stack developer at DesignXcel; and Victor Akintayo, who leads user experience management at Sterling Bank.
For those who aspire to follow in Blessing’s footsteps, Moat Academy is now accepting applications for its next cohort, set to begin on April 28, 2025. The intensive 13-week program, running Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm, is designed to provide students with hands-on training in the latest web development technologies, including frontend and backend development. By enrolling, participants will gain the skills needed to not only create innovative applications like Eco Earn but also take the first step towards a career in one of the fastest-growing sectors in Nigeria.
Those interested in joining the next cohort can apply today at Moat Academy's Sign-Up Page. But they’ll have to act quickly, as slots for the program fill up fast.
Blessing’s story is proof that with the right education, determination, and a passion for solving problems, young Nigerians can create impactful solutions that benefit not only the environment but the economy as well. Through Eco Earn, he has shown that a small idea, powered by coding skills, can make a big difference.
