A tragic incident unfolded in Umueñe village, Obiangwu community, Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of Imo State, where a 24-year-old man, Joseph Eke, lost his life after being brutally attacked by irate youths in the village.
Joseph, a father of one, reportedly got into a heated argument with his 76-year-old aunt, Ms. Beatrice Eke, after he allegedly ate her food without permission. The situation quickly escalated, leading to a violent confrontation between the two. In a fit of anger, Joseph allegedly struck his elderly aunt with a piece of wood, causing a serious injury to her head.
Beatrice, in pain and distress, raised an alarm, drawing the attention of local youths who rushed to the scene. Enraged by the attack on the elderly woman, the youths descended on Joseph, subjecting him to a brutal beating. The mob then dragged him to the village square, where he was bound hand and foot to a tree and left under the scorching sun.
Eyewitnesses recounted that while Joseph pleaded for mercy and even begged for water, his cries were ignored. Instead, individuals who reportedly had personal grievances against him took turns flogging him as he remained tied up. As the torture continued for hours, Joseph eventually began vomiting blood. By the evening, he succumbed to his injuries.
In an attempt to cover up the incident, some individuals allegedly tried to dispose of Joseph’s body before the police intervened. Officers from Umuneke arrived at the scene, recovered the remains, and transferred them to a morgue.
Authorities have since made several arrests, including Joseph’s father, Onyeewuchi Eke, who reportedly failed to alert law enforcement about the attack. Other suspects linked to the assault have also been detained, while a number of those involved are still at large.
Confirming the incident, the community’s government liaison officer, Comrade Chukwuma Anuforo, condemned the brutal killing and emphasized the need for justice. He reiterated that no individual has the right to take another person’s life, regardless of the circumstances.
*He further expressed confidence in the state’s Commissioner of Police, describing him as a “no-nonsense” officer committed to eradicating crime in Imo State.
Meanwhile, police investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining suspects who fled after Joseph’s death. The community has called for a thorough probe into the matter, urging authorities to ensure that all those involved in the unlawful killing face the full weight of the law.
The tragic incident has once again highlighted the dangers of mob justice, a practice that continues to claim innocent lives in various communities. Authorities have reiterated the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to handle disputes rather than resorting to violence.
As the investigation continues, residents of Umueñe village remain in shock over the incident, while Joseph’s grieving family demands justice for their slain son.
