Popular Nigerian Streamer, Peller, Claims Death Threats Over #30DayRants Controversy

Popular Nigerian streamer and content creator, Peller, has sparked controversy after urging Nigerians to desist from participating in the viral #30DayRants challenge on TikTok. His stance has not only earned him criticism but also, according to his claims, death threats from individuals displeased with his position.

The #30DayRants challenge, which has been widely embraced by Nigerian youths, serves as an avenue for citizens to express their frustrations over poor governance, economic hardship, and societal issues. However, Peller warned that the continued use of TikTok for such criticism could lead to the government banning the platform entirely in Nigeria, thereby affecting the livelihoods of many content creators, including himself.

His comments did not sit well with many Nigerians who accused him of attempting to silence valid grievances. Social media platforms were soon flooded with negative reactions, with many calling him out for prioritizing personal gain over the need for accountability in governance.

However, things took a darker turn when Peller, during a recent livestream, claimed that he had been receiving serious threats, including threats on his life.

“They Threatened to Shoot Me Like They Shot Salo”

In a visibly distressed state, Peller narrated his ordeal, revealing that unknown persons had warned him to be cautious.

“I have been receiving death threats. Some people threatened to shoot me like they shot Salo in Lekki Phase 1. They asked me to watch my back when going out,” he disclosed.

For context, his reference to "Salo" is believed to be a mention of fellow content creator, Oloba Salo, who was shot last year in the Lekki area of Lagos State. The attack on Salo sent shockwaves across the entertainment and social media communities, with many raising concerns about the safety of public figures who engage in controversial discourse.

Peller, apparently shaken by the threats, ended his livestream abruptly, stating:

“What is all these? I’m not talking again. Goodbye.”

Public Reactions: Divided Opinions

Since Peller’s revelation, reactions have been mixed. While some sympathizers condemned the threats and called for his safety, others dismissed his claims as attention-seeking.

“Threats are unacceptable. No matter how much you disagree with someone, violence is never the answer,” one social media user commented.

Conversely, some critics were less sympathetic. “You were okay when people suffered under bad governance, but when it affects your pocket, you suddenly care?” another person posted.

The controversy has also reignited conversations about the Nigerian government’s stance on social media censorship. TikTok has been a powerful platform for young Nigerians to voice their concerns, and many fear that any significant crackdown could mirror the infamous Twitter ban of 2021.

Authorities Yet to Respond

As of now, there has been no official statement from law enforcement agencies regarding Peller’s allegations. It remains unclear whether he has reported the threats to the police or if any investigation is underway.

For now, the controversy surrounding Peller and the #30DayRants challenge continues to unfold, further highlighting the ongoing struggle between free speech, activism, and personal interests in Nigeria’s digital space.
