The Cathedral Church of St Mary in Nnewi came alive with celebration, reverence, and heartfelt tributes on Holy Saturday, April 19th, 2025, as it hosted the historic induction and installation of Venerable Ekenedirichukwu Remigus Chukwunazaekpere Iroanusi. His appointment as the pioneer Sub-Dean of the Cathedral was officiated by His Lordship, Rt Revd. Ndubuisi Chukwuka Obi, Dean of the Cathedral and Bishop of the Diocese of Nnewi.
Amid a gathering of influential figures, the ceremony took on both spiritual and political dimensions. Among the most notable attendees was the leading Young Progressive Party (YPP) aspirant for the forthcoming Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election, Samben Nwosu. Nwosu’s presence not only highlighted the bond between politics and faith but also brought warmth and heartfelt nostalgia to the occasion, revealing layers of personal history with the man of the moment.
Nwosu, greeted with a rousing welcome, exemplified the Igbo proverb, “An old woman is never too old to dance a dance she knows well,” signifying that wisdom and experience never fade with age. His remarks during the ceremony underscored a deep sense of gratitude to God and appreciation for Bishop Obi’s spiritual leadership, especially for overseeing such a significant installation with grace and vision.
A personal connection was at the core of Nwosu’s tribute. Referring to Ven. Iroanusi as not just a clergyman but a brother and longtime friend, he shared that their relationship is rooted in trust and spiritual kinship. He fondly recalled that Iroanusi was godfather to his son, a testament to the spiritual intimacy that binds their families. This revelation drew emotional reactions from the audience, making the event more than just a formal installation but a tapestry of shared faith, loyalty, and brotherhood.
Nwosu’s speech reflected more than personal affection. He expressed unwavering belief in Ven. Iroanusi’s divine calling and emphasized the manifold spiritual gifts he possesses — especially wisdom, faith, and discernment. These, Nwosu stated, are not merely traits but vital tools for the challenging task ahead as Sub-Dean. With a sincere tone, he urged the Church and congregation to uphold Iroanusi in constant prayer as he embarks on this sacred responsibility.
Dignitaries and high-profile attendees added gravitas to the day’s proceedings. Chief Cletus Ibeto, Chairman of the occasion and CEO of the Ibeto Group, was present, signifying the event’s intersection of business leadership and ecclesiastical heritage. Also in attendance were Hon. Echezona Anazodo, Executive Chairman of Nnewi North; Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2025 Anambra State gubernatorial race; Nzuko-ora Nnewi PG, Hon. Jude Osumuoh; and Hon. Innocent Okoli, among others. Their presence underlined the wide-ranging impact of Ven. Iroanusi’s new role, which transcends ecclesiastical boundaries and touches every stratum of society.
The atmosphere inside the Cathedral was both celebratory and solemn, capturing the dual essence of the occasion — one that honored years of devotion while opening a new chapter of service. Hymns, prayers, and scriptural readings filled the sacred space, sealing the moment with divine affirmation.
Beyond the ecclesiastical rites and political nods, the event painted a broader picture of Nnewi’s evolving leadership landscape, where spiritual stewardship and civic responsibility are increasingly intertwined. The synergy between these realms, as demonstrated through figures like Nwosu and Iroanusi, reflects a community grounded in values yet reaching for progressive transformation.
As the sun set on that memorable Saturday, the echoes of shared prayers and communal joy lingered, marking not just a clerical milestone but a celebration of brotherhood, vision, and enduring legacy. The Cathedral Church of St Mary had, on this day, not only consecrated a new Sub-Dean but also reaffirmed the sacred bond between faith and leadership in Anambra State.
