Battle of the Brightest: Eight Schools Gear Up for ₦6m Prize at 2025 National Mathematics Finals

Lagos Set to Host Grand Finale of 2025 National Mathematics Tournament

The stage is set for a thrilling climax to the 2025 National Mathematics Tournament (NMT) as eight elite schools from across Nigeria prepare to face off this Saturday at the prestigious Eko Hotels in Lagos. With ₦6 million in prize money and national glory at stake, the event promises to be a celebration of intellect, resilience, and mathematical excellence.

This year’s finalists represent a vibrant tapestry of Nigeria’s educational landscape, cutting across seven states: Lagos, Edo, Ogun, Abuja, Rivers, Kaduna, and Anambra. Representing Lagos State are two powerhouses — Epe Girls High School and Penny International School. From the heart of the South-South, University of Benin Demonstration Secondary School brings the hopes of Edo State. Also vying for the top prize are Bosdem College from Ogun, Loyola Jesuit College representing the Federal Capital Territory, Graceland International School from Rivers, Little Scholars School in Kaduna, and Austica Memorial College flying the flag for Anambra State.

At the helm of this inspiring initiative is the Maths4Life Foundation, led by its President, Mr. Omoniyi Osuntuyi. He reaffirmed that the ₦6 million prize fund would be shared among the top three schools. In addition to the cash rewards, finalists will receive trophies, medals, and certificates in recognition of their efforts.

More than just a contest of numbers, the NMT is deeply rooted in a mission of empowerment. Osuntuyi emphasized that the tournament is especially designed to uplift students from underprivileged and marginalized backgrounds. "We aim to bridge the gap between current skills and future aspirations by providing resources, mentorship, and support to every participant," he said.

According to Osuntuyi, mathematics offers more than academic value — it fosters critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and logical reasoning, all of which are vital for success in modern society. “Maths4Life is committed to unlocking the transformative power of mathematics to empower young Nigerians at all levels,” he added.

Adding further insight, the foundation’s Admin Officer, Mopelola Ajetunmobi, highlighted the broader goals of the tournament. She noted that the competition serves as a bridge to the world of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), exposing students to potential careers in these fast-growing fields. “Through our events, students engage with STEM professionals and gain real-world insights into how mathematics is applied beyond the classroom,” she said.

Ajetunmobi also revealed exciting future plans for the foundation, including the production of reality television shows, films, and interactive events that integrate mathematics into everyday life. “Our vision is to build a society where mathematics is not only understood but celebrated,” she said. "We want to make math accessible, relatable, and appreciated — regardless of one’s background or field."

Since 2022, the foundation has successfully organized two editions of the World Mathematics Tournament and consistently hosts quarterly online Professional Development Trainings (PDTs) for students globally. These programs have helped nurture a generation of problem solvers equipped for the demands of 21st-century innovation.

As the countdown to Saturday’s finale begins, anticipation is running high. Students, teachers, and mentors are gearing up for what could be a life-changing experience, not just in prize money, but in the confidence and opportunities that lie ahead.

With the spotlight on mathematics and the bright young minds who master it, the 2025 National Mathematics Tournament promises to be more than a competition — it’s a celebration of Nigeria’s future.
