Chinua Achebe (Anambra) International Airport Steps Up as Enugu Airport Shuts for Runway Repairs

 

The Chinua Achebe International Cargo and Passenger Airport in Umueri, Anambra State, has swiftly stepped into the spotlight as Enugu Airport temporarily halts operations for runway repairs. Positioned to absorb the increased traffic, this modern facility is not only ready but also fully equipped to handle the surge in air travel, cementing its status as a growing regional aviation hub.

Named after the celebrated Nigerian literary icon, Chinua Achebe International Airport opened its doors in December 2021. Now, just a few years into its operation, it is witnessing a crucial test in its capabilities as it becomes the primary alternative for flights diverted from Enugu Airport, which is undergoing essential runway maintenance. The airport's infrastructure, combined with its strategic location and preparedness, makes it an ideal replacement during this period.

Martins Nwafor, the airport’s Managing Director/CEO, confirmed that the airport has already started accommodating early morning flights for United Nigeria Airlines and expects Air Peace, the pioneer airline at the facility, to increase its operations in the coming days. This shift in operations is a direct result of the Enugu airport's temporary closure, but it also highlights the growing role of Umueri’s airport in the region’s aviation landscape.

Airlines such as Ibom Air, ValuJet, Rano Air, and Overland are all in talks with the airport management, considering an expansion of their operations in Umueri. As an incentive, the airport is offering airlines attractive benefits, including free office space and collaborative marketing efforts, to encourage their presence. This proactive approach is designed not only to fill the immediate gap left by Enugu’s closure but also to make the airport an appealing long-term option for various carriers.

The airport’s infrastructure plays a key role in its ability to handle the growing traffic. It boasts a 3.7-kilometer-long, 45-meter-wide runway, making it the second longest in Nigeria. This significant feature allows it to accommodate large aircraft, such as the Boeing 747-800 series, ensuring that a wide range of flights can be safely managed. Additionally, the airport is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation systems, including a fully operational Instrument Landing System (ILS), DVOR, PAPI lights, and comprehensive runway and approach lighting. These systems ensure that the airport can handle both day and night operations, even in challenging weather conditions.

Efforts are also being made to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. Terminal facilities are being expanded to accommodate an increase in traffic, with the airport now able to handle 400 departing and 600 arriving passengers. Furthermore, cooling systems and other amenities are being bolstered to ensure a smooth and pleasant experience for travelers. For passengers in need of ground transportation, the airport has introduced free shuttle services to key locations, making it easier for them to reach their destinations after their flights.

Despite concerns about security in the region, Nwafor assured that the airport has maintained a clean security record since its opening. With over 45 police officers, 23 local vigilantes, and a fully fenced perimeter, the airport has successfully avoided any breaches. Additionally, aviation security and firefighting services are managed through a service agreement with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), ensuring that safety standards remain high.

The airport’s commitment to smooth and efficient operations is further bolstered by its on-site aviation fuel supply, which ensures that flights experience no disruption due to fuel shortages. This self-sufficiency has been a key factor in the airport’s ability to maintain consistent operations. Since its inception, the Chinua Achebe International Airport has served over 450,000 passengers and facilitated nearly 7,000 flights, with Air Peace and United Nigeria Airlines remaining its primary operators.

Anambra State’s investment in the airport has been a driving force behind its success. The state government has supported the development of infrastructure, including providing firefighting equipment, medical facilities, and maintenance tools. The airport has also become financially sustainable, covering its operational costs and staff salaries through its own generated revenue. Nwafor expressed confidence that the airport will continue to thrive without the need to transfer control to FAAN, stating that Anambra has both the vision and resources to maintain and grow the airport.

The Chinua Achebe International Airport's position between major cities such as Enugu, Asaba, Owerri, and Port Harcourt places it in a prime location to serve the entire Southeast region. This central positioning further enhances its potential as a key aviation hub, making it a convenient gateway for both domestic and international travelers.
