Federal Government Declares Easter Holidays, Calls for National Reflection and Unity

In a gesture rooted in both spiritual reverence and national solidarity, the Federal Government has declared Friday, April 18 and Monday, April 21 as public holidays to commemorate Good Friday and Easter Monday respectively.

The official announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who conveyed the message on behalf of the Federal Government. The statement, which was disseminated through the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajani, was met with warm reception from the Christian community and other Nigerians looking forward to the Easter break.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo extended warm congratulations to Christians across the nation, celebrating what he described as a "joyous and spiritually significant occasion" that symbolizes hope, sacrifice, and redemption. He encouraged believers to reflect deeply on the essence of Easter, highlighting the selfless love and sacrificial death of Jesus Christ as a moral compass for daily living.

"The season of Easter is not just a time of celebration but also one of introspection," Tunji-Ojo said. "It is a call to embody the very values that Jesus Christ stood for—sacrifice, unconditional love, humility, and the relentless pursuit of peace."

He urged all Nigerians, irrespective of faith or background, to take advantage of the holiday to pray for the peace, unity, and continued stability of the country, especially during a time marked by economic challenges and security concerns in various regions. According to him, collective efforts in faith and goodwill can pave the way for a stronger and more united Nigeria.

The Minister further reassured Nigerians of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, a strategic framework designed to spur national growth and development. Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed that the administration is steadfast in its pursuit of policies that not only restore public confidence but also deliver meaningful progress across all sectors of the economy.

"The Renewed Hope Agenda is more than just a political slogan—it’s a promise of transformative governance and national upliftment," he noted. "President Tinubu is committed to making Nigeria a land of opportunities where peace and prosperity reign."

Beyond the call for reflection and prayer, the Minister also appealed to citizens to extend compassion and kindness to one another during this festive period. He emphasized that small acts of generosity and consideration can have far-reaching impacts, especially in communities where many struggle to make ends meet.

"In the spirit of Easter, I implore Nigerians to reach out with love to their neighbours. Whether through charity, words of encouragement, or simple gestures of goodwill, let us be each other’s keeper," he said.

Tunji-Ojo concluded his address by wishing Christians a blissful Easter filled with peace, joy, and spiritual renewal. He also extended season’s greetings to all Nigerians, urging them to celebrate responsibly and remain law-abiding throughout the holiday.

As the nation prepares for the long weekend, this official pronouncement serves as a timely reminder of the enduring values that hold the Nigerian fabric together—faith, unity, and hope.
