IHIALA, ANAMBRA STATE —
What began as a tragic and disturbing discovery in the quiet community of Umunwaji Ogboro, Ihiala Local Government Area, has quickly evolved into a high-stakes police operation, with arrests made, confessions obtained, and a manhunt underway.
Mrs. Theresa Igbojonu, an 80-year-old grandmother known for her peaceful demeanor, was found brutally murdered in her home under circumstances that have left the entire community reeling. According to police reports, the elderly woman was tied at the legs and mouth before her life was snuffed out—an act described as both callous and calculated.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed on Tuesday that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the gruesome incident. The accused—Chidiebere Igboanugo and Emmanuel Ibeabuchi, both male and residents of the same community as the victim—are currently in custody as investigations continue.
The harrowing case first came to light on April 2, 2025, when a report was filed at the Ihiala Divisional Police Station around 11:30 p.m., alerting authorities to the suspected murder. What initially seemed like a senseless killing soon revealed layers of sinister intent when a black CG motorcycle, believed to have been stolen from the deceased, was spotted three days later by none other than her son.
While driving past Ezego Junction in Ihiala, the deceased’s son recognized the stolen motorcycle being ridden by Chidiebere Igboanugo. His alertness and quick action led to the suspect’s apprehension on April 5, marking a breakthrough in the investigation. Under questioning, Chidiebere reportedly confessed to the crime and named Emmanuel Ibeabuchi as a co-conspirator.
Based on this revelation, officers swiftly moved to arrest Ibeabuchi on April 7. During subsequent interrogations, the suspects divulged the names of two additional individuals allegedly involved in the crime—Alla and Emeka—who are now fugitives.
The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, visibly disturbed by the cruelty of the act, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Awka. He also issued a directive for an intensified manhunt to apprehend the two fleeing suspects and bring them to justice.
“This is a heinous crime against a defenseless elderly woman. We will not rest until everyone responsible faces the full weight of the law,” the Commissioner stated.
Meanwhile, the suspects in custody are expected to be arraigned in court as soon as the ongoing investigation is concluded. Sources close to the CID have disclosed that the police are leaving no stone unturned, following several leads and working closely with community informants to locate the remaining members of the gang.
As residents of Umunwaji Ogboro mourn the loss of a beloved matriarch, the unfolding investigation underscores the role of community vigilance and swift police action in ensuring justice is served.
With emotions still raw and trust shaken, this case serves as a grim reminder that even the most tranquil communities are not immune to acts of darkness. But with suspects in hand and the law closing in on the rest, there is a glimmer of hope that closure—and justice—are within reach.
