As the political climate heats up ahead of the November 8, 2025, Anambra governorship election, the Labour Party candidate, George Moghalu, appears to be gaining traction beyond traditional party lines. In a surprising show of solidarity, a group known as Moghalu Fishers of Men paid a high-profile visit to Moghalu at his Uruagu-Nnewi country home, situated in Nnewi North local government area of Anambra State.
The visit, which took place on Wednesday, April 23, 2025, has been described by political observers as a significant political statement, especially given the identity of the group’s leader—Hon. Mathias Eze, the current chairman of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in Fegge Ward 3, Onitsha South LGA.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Hon. Eze declared unequivocal support for George Moghalu, stating that his faction of PDP has chosen to throw their weight behind the Labour Party for the upcoming election. His remarks came with strong criticisms of the PDP's current structure in Anambra State, asserting that the party, in his view, has become practically invisible and therefore incapable of mounting a credible challenge in the polls.
“To me, there are only two political parties truly in the race—Labour Party and the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA),” Eze said. “PDP, as far as I am concerned, does not exist in Anambra today. And when a party ceases to exist, it also means it lacks a candidate for the governorship race.”
His endorsement extended beyond mere party politics. Eze emphasized that the choice to support Moghalu stemmed from a careful consideration of the available options, adding that the synergy between Peter Obi’s national influence and Moghalu’s local relevance could serve as a catalyst for transformation in the state. He encouraged Moghalu to actively engage Labour Party stakeholders and elected officials to consolidate internal support ahead of the campaign season.
The visit wasn't just political theater—it was also an exercise in grassroots mobilization. Evangelist Theo-Ray Ejikeme, another prominent member of the group, revealed that Moghalu Fishers of Men comprises mostly non-indigenous residents and various socio-political associations within Anambra. He explained that their visit was intended to establish a rapport with the Labour Party candidate as a prelude to full campaign collaboration.
“This visit is about relationship building,” Ejikeme remarked. “We’re here not just to endorse but to familiarize ourselves with a man we admire—someone whose political journey and developmental agenda we’ve been tracking. Our members are convinced that George Moghalu is the right candidate to move Anambra forward.”
Ejikeme further explained that although the political terrain is crowded with many aspirants, the group chose to rally behind Moghalu based on his proven track record in public service and development.
Adding weight to the chorus of endorsements was Engr. Linus Eze, the zonal director for non-indigenes in Anambra South. In his brief speech, he described Moghalu as a leader well-suited for the state’s top job, calling him “a square peg in a square hole.” According to Engr. Eze, the time is ripe for a candidate like Moghalu to ascend to leadership, as he embodies the competence and vision required to guide Anambra into a new era of governance.
George Moghalu, visibly moved by the visit and the confidence reposed in him, expressed gratitude to the group and assured them of his commitment to inclusive leadership. He reiterated his resolve to carry all stakeholders along in his bid to secure victory and deliver effective governance.
The symbolic show of unity across party and ethnic lines is expected to influence voter perception as the state gears up for what promises to be a closely contested election. As political allegiances shift and voter loyalty evolves, observers are closely watching to see if this unusual coalition will translate into real political capital for the Labour Party at the polls.
With strategic endorsements and growing grassroots support, George Moghalu’s campaign appears to be gathering the kind of momentum that could reshape the political landscape in Anambra come November.
