The National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW) has sounded a stern warning against the illegal possession of arms in Nigeria’s Southeast geopolitical zone, vowing to clamp down on offenders and ensure full prosecution.
Major General Okechukwu Ugo (rtd), the NCCSALW Zonal Coordinator for the Southeast, delivered this message during an interactive session with the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council. He identified Anambra and Imo as the states with the highest prevalence of unlicensed firearms in the region, describing the situation as a serious threat to security and public order.
According to Ugo, the possession of illegal arms is a key driver of insecurity, exacerbating violent crimes, kidnappings, and communal clashes. He warned individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms to surrender them immediately to avoid severe legal consequences. The retired General emphasized that those caught with illegal arms could face up to 10 years in prison, as stipulated by Nigerian law.
Recoveries and Prosecutions
Speaking on efforts made so far in tackling the menace, Ugo disclosed that the NCCSALW has successfully recovered approximately 20,000 illegal firearms across the country. Out of these, over 10,000 have been destroyed following judicial rulings, while others remain subjects of ongoing legal action.
“The government is determined to rid the country of illicit weapons that fuel violence and criminality. We have recovered a significant number of illegal arms, but the work is far from over. Those still in possession of such weapons must return them through the appropriate channels before the law catches up with them,” he warned.
Call for Media Partnership
Recognizing the critical role of the media in shaping public perception and awareness, Major General Ugo called for strong collaboration with journalists to sensitize the public on the dangers of illegal arms possession. He stressed that media platforms should be used to educate citizens on the legal process for acquiring firearms and the risks associated with unauthorized ownership.
“The media has a crucial role to play in this campaign. We need your support in spreading awareness, reporting incidents, and ensuring that the message reaches every corner of the Southeast. We must collectively work towards a safer society,” he appealed.
Journalists Pledge Support
Responding to the NCCSALW’s request, the Chairman of the NUJ Anambra Council, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu, assured that journalists in the state would give the center maximum support in its mission to curb illegal arms proliferation. He acknowledged the need for public enlightenment on the dangers of illegal arms possession and pledged to amplify the agency’s message through media platforms.
“We recognize the importance of this campaign and will do our part in ensuring that the public is well-informed. Security is everyone’s business, and as journalists, we are committed to partnering with NCCSALW in restoring peace and stability to our communities,” Odogwu affirmed.
The Bigger Picture
The proliferation of small arms and light weapons has long been a major security challenge in Nigeria, fueling violent crimes, insurgency, and communal clashes. Efforts by the government and security agencies to curb this menace have faced challenges due to porous borders, political interference, and the lucrative arms trade.
However, with renewed commitments from agencies like the NCCSALW, alongside collaboration with the media and other stakeholders, there is growing optimism that the fight against illegal arms possession can yield meaningful results.
As the clampdown on illicit arms possession intensifies, security agencies are urging residents of Anambra, Imo, and other affected states to cooperate by providing useful information and surrendering any unlicensed firearms in their possession. With stricter enforcement and widespread awareness, authorities hope to make significant strides in ensuring peace and stability in the Southeast and beyond.
