Armed Suspect Nabbed Amid Imoka Festival Security Sweep in Awka, Police Officer Injured

As the vibrant Imoka cultural festival kicked off in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, an intense confrontation unfolded between security operatives and a suspected criminal, culminating in an arrest and injuries on both sides. The Anambra State Police Command disclosed that a 25-year-old suspect, identified as Nasiru Samaila, was apprehended following a gunfight that broke out late Monday evening.

The police operation was conducted by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who were acting on intelligence reports suggesting that certain individuals planned to exploit the festive atmosphere to commit crimes and disrupt public peace. Authorities targeted several identified black spots in Awka and its environs to prevent any criminal activities during the festival period.

During the raid, Samaila, reportedly armed with a locally made Beretta pistol and carrying live ammunition, opened fire in an attempt to evade arrest. Police officers returned fire, wounding the suspect in his right leg before successfully detaining him. Officers also recovered other incriminating items including a knife and a large quantity of substances suspected to be hard drugs from the suspect’s possession.

One police officer sustained a gunshot wound during the exchange and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is said to be responding well to treatment. The police have assured the public that the injured officer’s condition is stable and that all necessary medical care is being provided.

According to SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, the crackdown was part of a broader effort to maintain law and order during the highly anticipated festival. The Imoka festival, a significant cultural event celebrated by the Igbo community in Awka, attracts large crowds, which criminals sometimes use as cover to perpetrate unlawful acts.

“Miscreants have, over time, tried to use the festival as a cover to engage in criminal behavior, making life difficult for residents and indigenes of Awka,” Ikenga stated. “To ensure a peaceful and crime-free celebration, we intensified surveillance and conducted discreet operations on black spots known for criminal activity.”

The police spokesperson emphasized that the command remains resolute in its commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of citizens during the festival and beyond. Authorities have promised further updates as the investigation continues and urged the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.

Community leaders and festival organizers have welcomed the swift response by the police, stressing the importance of security in preserving the cultural heritage and ensuring the safety of all participants. The arrest and subsequent police action serve as a strong message to those who might consider exploiting cultural celebrations for criminal purposes.

As Awka continues to celebrate the Imoka festival, security forces are expected to maintain heightened vigilance, reinforcing their presence to deter any potential disturbances. The incident highlights ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement in balancing cultural festivities with public safety, but also demonstrates their readiness to act decisively when necessary.

The Anambra State Police Command has urged residents to report any suspicious activities immediately and assured them that every effort will be made to keep the city safe throughout the duration of the festival and beyond.
