Legal Counsel to May Yul-Edochie Appeals for Calm Over Divorce Timeline, Confirms Progress on Key Issues

The legal representative of May Yul-Edochie, Emeka Ugwuonye, has issued a clarion call for the public to exercise patience and refrain from undue speculation regarding the status of her ongoing divorce from Nollywood actor Yul Edochie. Ugwuonye made this appeal through a detailed post shared on his official Facebook page today, May 25, where he addressed the growing public obsession with the timeline of the dissolution process.

Amid swirling questions and increasing scrutiny over the pace of proceedings, Ugwuonye emphasized that significant legal milestones have already been reached, particularly concerning the custody of children, support arrangements, and division of marital assets. He clarified that the process is not stagnant but moving along a structured legal path, tailored to the specific circumstances of the case.

His statement highlighted the multi-faceted nature of divorce litigation, stressing that it comprises four distinct components: the dissolution of the marriage and the right to remarry, custody and support arrangements for children, division of joint property, and the pursuit of damages against actress Judy Austin for her alleged extramarital relationship with Yul Edochie.

Public discourse, however, seems to have fixated almost exclusively on the first issue—formal dissolution of the marriage—ignoring the complexities and legal work that underpin the other aspects. Ugwuonye noted that while the right to remarry is technically the most straightforward item on the list, it cannot be resolved until issues surrounding the children and marital assets are fully addressed.

Several online commentators and social media users have openly criticized the pace of the divorce, some even directing their frustration at Ugwuonye himself. Responding to this backlash, the lawyer cautioned against the dangers of misinformed commentary and gossip-driven speculation, stating that such behavior not only misrepresents the facts but also adds unnecessary pressure on his client and legal team.

Ugwuonye firmly rejected the narrative that May remains "bound" by her marriage due to the yet-to-be-finalized court proceedings. He asserted that she is living freely and independently, managing her personal and family affairs with poise. According to him, the only technical restriction she faces is the legal inability to remarry—something she is reportedly not prioritizing at the moment.

He further accused some members of the public of being less interested in justice or May’s well-being and more concerned with potential headlines, such as news of a new romantic partner or a dramatic courtroom twist. “You might even want to compare Yul to whoever her next partner may be regarding wealth or attractiveness,” Ugwuonye wrote, pointing to what he described as a troubling trend of voyeuristic fascination with May’s personal life.

May, he noted, is currently focused on her children and her career. She maintains control of the family residence and is economically stable. Ugwuonye also confirmed that there is no urgency on her part to enter a new marriage or romantic relationship.

Urging supporters to temper their expectations and adopt a more measured approach, Ugwuonye stressed the importance of trust in the legal process and the professionals handling it. He warned that unchecked public commentary could inadvertently sabotage the delicate progress being made behind the scenes.

Concluding his remarks, he reminded the public that legal proceedings are inherently complex and that not every development can or should be made public in real-time. His appeal was not only for patience but for a deeper understanding of the intricacies involved in a high-profile divorce case—particularly one laden with emotional, financial, and reputational stakes.

May Yul-Edochie’s divorce journey is far from over, but it is advancing. Her legal team remains committed, and according to Ugwuonye, the woman at the heart of it all is not just surviving—she’s thriving.
