Onitsha Traders Endorse Governor Soludo for Second Term, Citing Tangible Progress

Traders in Onitsha, Anambra State, have publicly endorsed Governor Chukwuma Soludo for a second term in office, signaling strong grassroots support as the state heads toward the November 8, 2025, governorship election.

The endorsement came during a landmark event—the 40th anniversary celebration of the Ogbaru Main Market—marked by a large turnout of market stakeholders, political figures, and community leaders. The event was presided over by the Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Tochukwu Udeze, who praised the unity and initiative demonstrated by the market community.

Support for Governor Soludo was amplified by the presence and backing of renowned businessman Chief Joseph Ukeji, who emphasized the vital role the people of Anambra must play in shaping the state’s future. According to Ukeji, Soludo's administration has made notable strides, particularly in enhancing public safety and combatting criminal activities that had previously plagued the region.

Governor Soludo’s approach to governance, especially in the security sector, has not gone unnoticed. Ukeji highlighted that the incidence of kidnapping and violent crimes has significantly reduced since Soludo assumed office. He attributed this progress to decisive security strategies and the governor’s relentless drive to ensure a safer Anambra.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Ndubuisi Ochiogu, Chairman of the Ogbaru Main Market, echoed similar sentiments. Speaking on behalf of the traders, Ochiogu praised Governor Soludo for transforming both the security and infrastructure landscape of Anambra. He stated that the stability achieved under the current administration has created a more conducive environment for commerce and livelihood.

Underlining the governor’s relevance to grassroots development, Ochiogu stressed the importance of continuity in leadership, asserting that only through sustained progress could Anambra continue to thrive. He firmly declared the market’s unified support for Soludo’s re-election, citing the governor’s "outstanding performance across all sectors."

Ochiogu also took a moment to reflect on his own leadership within the market community. His administration has reportedly made significant progress in enhancing internal market security, effectively curbing issues such as shop break-ins and substantial thefts of cash and goods. Through collaborative efforts, he said, they have restored a sense of safety and order in the bustling commercial center.

One notable achievement he shared was the successful resolution of long-standing debts with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), totaling over N11 million. He also detailed how his administration has transitioned the market to solar-powered lighting, a move he says has not only improved nighttime visibility but also enhanced overall security and public safety.

The gathering was a showcase of both unity and purpose. Special Adviser to the Governor on Market Affairs, Evaristus Uba, and President-General of Anambra’s umbrella market body, Humphrey Anuna, were also present. Their attendance underscored the administration’s connection to the grassroots and its commitment to the welfare of the trading community.

Speakers at the event reiterated that building a stronger Anambra is a shared responsibility. The endorsement of Soludo was not merely symbolic but a declaration of confidence in a leader whose policies have resonated deeply with the working populace.

As political momentum builds toward the 2025 governorship election, this early and enthusiastic endorsement from a key economic bloc suggests that Governor Soludo may head into the campaign season with significant public goodwill, especially from the commercial heart of Anambra.
