Commercial Flight Era Begins in Ebonyi as Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport Welcomes First Aircraft with Cheers

Cheers and celebration filled the air on Friday morning as Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo International Airport, Onueke, Ebonyi State officially launched into the era of commercial aviation. The long-anticipated commencement of flight operations finally materialized as the first commercial aircraft landed, marking a significant milestone in the state's infrastructural and economic development journey.

United Nigeria Airlines, with its aircraft registered as 5N-8WV, became the trailblazer, making the historic landing at exactly 10:30 a.m. The flight originated from Abuja, bringing with it a cabin full of excited passengers who were not just arriving at their destination, but also becoming part of a defining moment in Ebonyi State’s history.

One of the passengers, Emmanuel Nwafor, could barely contain his emotions. Speaking with admiration and pride, he described the experience as surreal, saying it felt like a dream that had finally come true.

"We’ve been yearning for this for years. At a point, we were even growing impatient because the scale of investment here demanded timely utilization. The delay was frustrating, but today makes it all worth it,” he said. “The airport is nothing short of world-class, and I am privileged to be among the first to land here. Everything—from takeoff to landing—was incredibly smooth.”

His sentiments were echoed by Professor Chigozie Ogbu, another passenger on the historic flight. With a background in aviation awareness and governance, he lauded the state government’s efforts, affirming the quality of the runway and facilities.

“This landing shows that Ebonyi State is now firmly on the map of Nigerian aviation,” Professor Ogbu stated. “The runway is world-class. As someone who frequently flies, I can confidently say the experience matches what you'd expect in any developed country.”

The flight's success extended beyond those who landed, as notable individuals also departed from the airport to Abuja. Among them was Chief Elias Mbam, former Chairman of the Revenue Mobilization, Allocation and Fiscal Commission, who shared his impressions after boarding.

“The commencement of commercial flight operations here is a proud moment for every Ebonyian. I’m impressed with what I’ve seen—the infrastructure is solid, and I hope to see even more flights added to the schedule,” he noted. “With consistent operations and proper maintenance, this airport will become a regional hub.”

State officials were not left out of the excitement. Commissioner for Aviation and Transport Technology, Mrs. Ngozi Obichukwu, expressed deep appreciation to Governor Francis Nwifuru for prioritizing the airport’s operational readiness. According to her, the successful arrival and subsequent departure on Friday signal the beginning of regular commercial aviation for the state.

She further revealed plans for expanded services beginning next week. “This coming Monday, flights from Lagos will arrive here and return as well. This is no longer a test run. We are fully operational, and the momentum will only grow from here,” she affirmed.

The Commissioner, however, urged residents and travelers to respect flight schedules to avoid missed flights. “We had some missed flights today because people came late. This is not something to take lightly. Our operations are strict, and we advise everyone to treat flight schedules with utmost seriousness,” she said.

Friday’s maiden flight is more than a symbolic win—it is a practical step toward boosting Ebonyi State’s economy, easing travel for residents, and attracting investment. For years, the state has been working to shed its underdeveloped image, and the successful inauguration of flight operations at Wilberforce Chuba Okadigbo Airport sends a powerful message of progress and preparedness.

As Ebonyians bask in the pride of their new gateway to the skies, one thing is clear: the wait was long, but the arrival was grand.
