From Bricklayer to Governor: Ebonyi Governor Nwifuru Recounts Humble Past, Urges Youth to Trust in Divine Timing

 

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State recently shared a deeply personal story that painted a vivid picture of resilience, faith, and destiny. Speaking during an all-night Adoration programme in Abakaliki, organized as part of the celebration marking the second anniversary of his administration, the Governor offered a rare glimpse into his life before the privileges of political office.

A hushed crowd listened intently as Nwifuru, now the number one citizen of the state, took them down memory lane. He recounted a time when his only aspiration was to earn N1,000 from back-breaking jobs just to survive each day. He described himself as a former bus conductor and bricklayer—occupations that are often associated with the working-class struggles that most Nigerian youths can relate to.

It wasn’t a speech laden with political rhetoric. Rather, it was an emotional confession, laced with gratitude, humility, and a deep sense of divine purpose. His journey from the muddy construction sites of Ebonyi to the dignified seat of governance, he said, was nothing short of a miracle.

“I used to pray to get a job that could pay me N1,000 daily,” Nwifuru disclosed, his voice steady but reflective. “At that time, I was a conductor and a bricklayer. Life was very hard. And in those moments of struggle, I turned to God.”

His connection with the Adoration Ministry, led by Catholic priest Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, was not merely spiritual, but deeply formative. Between 2001 and 2003, the young Nwifuru often found himself at the Adoration Ground in Enugu, even during turbulent times when the ministry faced internal crises. He credited those nights of prayer and worship as the foundation of his current political journey.

“The Adoration ground was my escape and my spiritual fuel,” he said. “Even when I had no clear path, I found solace there. I remember sleeping in Enugu with my fellow hustlers, and once we had a little break, I would make my way to the Adoration Ground. Those moments shaped me.”

He didn't hold back in expressing gratitude to Father Mbaka, whom he described as a reliable and trustworthy spiritual leader who never judged him based on his circumstances.

“Father Mbaka never allowed my humble background to cloud his support or advice. He saw something in me even when I didn’t see it myself. He has remained my consultant and guide in so many ways,” the Governor revealed.

Now in a position of power and influence, Nwifuru emphasized that he views his current role as a divine assignment rather than a political achievement. According to him, his rise is not to be seen merely as personal success but as a testimony for young people who are currently struggling with their own paths.

“I consider it a gift and a privilege to serve as your governor. Not everyone is gifted to speak to people from a place of influence. That’s why I see my current role not as a right, but as a divine trust,” he noted.

Reflecting further on his journey, he shared a key turning point in his life. “Even before I ran for re-election in 2007, I was still mixing cement on construction sites. Just five years later, I was elected Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. That same young man, who was once desperate for N1,000, is now your governor.”

The Governor’s story was not shared for applause or sympathy. Rather, it was a solemn charge to the youths to remain steadfast, resilient, and God-fearing. He warned that failing in his duties as governor would not only be a personal tragedy but a collective loss for the youths who look up to him as a beacon of hope.

“Pray for me,” he urged, “that I do not fail in this God-given assignment. Because if I do, the consequences will be felt most by the youths. I am here because of you, and I must not let you down.”

As he ended his speech, the atmosphere was heavy with inspiration. Young people in attendance clapped not just out of admiration but out of recognition—recognition that one of their own had risen from the dust and now stood at the helm of leadership, bearing both the burden and blessing of their shared story.

Governor Nwifuru’s tale isn’t just about politics or power. It is a testament to what faith, hard work, and divine timing can achieve. It serves as a powerful reminder that the path to greatness often begins in the most unexpected places.
