Dr. Peter Okeh, a senior figure within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ebonyi State, has expressed strong support for Mr. Peter Obi, positioning the former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate as the most competent and broadly accepted contender for Nigeria’s top office in 2027.
While addressing a group of journalists in Abakaliki on Sunday, Okeh gave a scathing assessment of the current state of the nation, stating that Nigeria is grappling with the most severe economic challenges in its history. He pointed to widespread hunger, corruption, insecurity, and economic hardship as evidence that the current government has failed Nigerians on nearly every front.
Okeh didn’t mince words in declaring his preference for Peter Obi, whom he believes is best suited to lead the newly formed coalition of opposition forces. He credited Obi with building a powerful grassroots movement, describing the Obidient Movement as a force to be reckoned with in the coming election cycle. According to him, this movement has not only endured since the 2023 elections but has grown stronger in both size and influence.
“Mr. Peter Obi stands out as the most qualified candidate to lead this coalition into the 2027 elections. He is not only competent but widely accepted by the masses. His experience from the 2023 race has made him more prepared than ever,” Okeh said.
He emphasized that Obi’s continued engagement with citizens across all regions of the country has deepened his national appeal. Unlike the last election season, Okeh noted, Obi has traversed the nation extensively, connecting with various communities and demonstrating a deep commitment to understanding the issues affecting ordinary Nigerians.
Political observers may recall that the Labour Party candidate garnered significant support from youths and urban voters in 2023, even though he ultimately fell short in the official results. This time, according to Okeh, circumstances have shifted dramatically.
“People have now experienced the full consequences of bad governance. The cost of living is unbearable, the level of poverty is shocking, and the disconnect between the leadership and the citizens has never been so wide. Nigerians have seen enough,” he remarked.
A central theme of Okeh’s address was the principle of power rotation. He pointed out that many citizens across the southern region feel that it is only fair for the South to complete an eight-year presidency, a practice that has become a political expectation in recent cycles. Denying this, he warned, could further stoke regional dissatisfaction and worsen the political divide in the country.
He went on to praise the formation of the new opposition coalition, calling it a critical and historic moment for Nigerian democracy. For him, it is not merely a political arrangement but a lifeline for a country that has been pushed to its limits by what he described as the failed policies and authoritarian tendencies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“It is an inspiring development to witness distinguished Nigerians come together to rescue this nation from the stranglehold of one-party dominance. This coalition is not just a political move, it is an act of patriotism,” he asserted.
Okeh underscored that the upcoming 2027 election will not follow the usual political playbook. He described it as a battle between the suffering masses and a ruling elite that has grown increasingly disconnected from the realities on the ground.
“Make no mistake. The next election will be about APC against all Nigerians. People are angry, hungry, and desperate for change. The manipulation and rigging that have plagued previous elections will not be tolerated this time,” he warned.
Confidence was also expressed in the ability of the opposition coalition to overcome historical challenges such as vote buying and electoral fraud. He said Nigerians are more politically aware and determined to defend their votes, especially in the face of widespread suffering and disillusionment with the current administration.
Peter Obi, who has yet to officially declare his 2027 ambition, remains a figure of national discussion. With voices like Okeh’s rallying behind him, the possibility of him leading a strong and unified opposition seems increasingly plausible.
For many, the road to 2027 has already begun, and Dr. Peter Okeh's remarks serve as an early signal that the political tides in Nigeria may be preparing to shift.
