Obidient Movement Denounces Allegations of Rift Between Peter Obi and Nenadi Usman as Baseless Propaganda

Rumors alleging a fallout between Peter Obi and the Acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, have been categorically dismissed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement. Speaking amid growing political chatter triggered by Obi's recent appearance at a campaign event in Anambra State, Tanko asserted that Obi remains a loyal and unwavering figure within the Labour Party.

Questions had arisen following Obi’s presence at the official campaign flag-off of the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Anambra State, Dr. George Moghalu. Critics and political observers attempted to use this appearance to spin a narrative suggesting that Obi’s actions pointed to a rift within the party’s top echelon. However, Tanko was quick to counter this narrative, asserting that such speculation is not only false but also politically motivated.

Tanko emphasized that Peter Obi has remained steadfast in his commitment to the Labour Party since he emerged as the party’s presidential candidate during the 2023 general elections. His attendance at party events, including the Anambra campaign launch, is a continuation of that commitment. According to Tanko, Obi’s actions are in alignment with the party’s direction and reflect his consistent support for its democratic processes.

His words were direct: “His Excellency Peter Obi has consistently affirmed that he remains a member of the Labour Party under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman. He has also clearly stated his support for all individuals who had previously secured the party’s ticket to contest political positions.”

Tanko went further, describing the rumors of a betrayal as nothing more than politically charged fiction aimed at sowing discord. “The rumour that Peter Obi has betrayed Senator Nenadi Usman is entirely baseless. It is a false narrative being peddled by opposition elements to distract,” he said.

The Labour Party’s recent political activities in Anambra State have sparked renewed interest in the party’s internal cohesion, especially as the state prepares for its gubernatorial election. Obi’s decision to attend the flag-off of Dr. George Moghalu’s campaign was framed by some detractors as evidence of political defiance or personal disagreement within the party. Tanko, however, was adamant that such interpretations are not grounded in fact.

He clarified that Senator Nenadi Usman and other senior party stakeholders were not only aware of Obi’s presence at the event but were fully in support of the candidate and the campaign itself. “Senator Nenadi Usman, along with other key stakeholders in this movement, are fully aware of and support the recent developments,” Tanko explained.

He also praised Peter Obi’s consistent political character, describing him as a man known for keeping his word and maintaining integrity. “Let’s not forget that His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, is a man of integrity, known for keeping his word. His decision to support Dr. George Moghalu, the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Anambra State, reflects that consistency,” he stated.

Tanko noted that those voicing concerns about the party’s direction are mostly political figures aligned with the opposition. He emphasized that current communications and decisions within the party are coming from legitimate representatives, including senators, members of the National and State Assemblies, and members of the Obidient Movement leadership.

“This marks a clear departure from the old political order,” Tanko observed, pointing out that the movement’s goal is not to mimic traditional political machinery, but to redefine participation with transparency and unity.

He urged Nigerians to reject the ongoing misinformation and remain focused on the larger objective, which he said is to build a formidable political alternative rooted in principles and people-driven ideals. “Our focus remains on one goal: building a strong movement, a united Labour Party and a better Nigeria. That, we shall achieve,” he concluded.

As Nigeria’s political landscape continues to shift, the Obidient Movement and its principal actors appear to be consolidating their base and clarifying their intentions. Amid distractions and media noise, they are signaling that internal cohesion and a focus on long-term national development remain top priorities.
