Tragedy in Anambra as Gunmen Attack Ebonyi Indigenes During Peaceful Gathering, Leaving 10 Dead and Several Injured [VIDEO]

Ogboji community in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State was plunged into deep mourning on Monday evening following a violent attack that claimed the lives of at least ten individuals. According to local sources, the attackers, whose identities remain unknown, arrived the quiet village in two Sport Utility Vehicles and opened fire on a gathering of Ebonyi State indigenes without warning.

Eyewitnesses recount a chaotic scene that unfolded just after dusk. The gathering, which was reportedly a routine meeting of Ebonyi community members residing in the area, quickly turned into a bloodbath as gunshots rang out across the neighborhood. People who had been engaged in conversation and light-hearted discussions found themselves diving for cover or attempting to flee. By the time the assailants sped away, ten individuals lay lifeless and nine others were writhing in pain from bullet wounds.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the tragic event in a statement released Tuesday morning. He detailed how the attackers stormed the venue without provocation and began shooting indiscriminately. His statement described the scene as one of “unprovoked violence” and expressed the police command’s commitment to pursuing the criminals involved.

Security operatives responded swiftly to the attack, securing the area and transporting the wounded to nearby hospitals. Medical personnel did all they could, but ten victims were declared dead upon arrival. The remaining injured individuals are currently receiving treatment, with some reported to be in critical condition. Authorities have since transferred the bodies of the deceased to the morgue as investigations continue.

Police presence in Ogboji has significantly increased following the attack. A combined security task force, led by the police, has begun combing the surrounding area in search of clues that might lead to the identification and apprehension of those responsible. SP Ikenga noted that intelligence gathering efforts have been intensified and that community members are being encouraged to provide any information that could aid the investigation.

The emotional toll on the Ebonyi community in Anambra has been overwhelming. Residents describe the victims as hardworking men and women who contributed to the local economy and participated actively in civic life. Community leaders have called for calm but are demanding a thorough investigation and immediate justice for those killed.

"We are devastated by this heartless act. Our people were holding a peaceful meeting. Nobody expected this kind of horror," said one community elder who asked not to be named. He added that the attack has not only left families in anguish but has also created a climate of fear among other non-indigenous groups living in the region.

Civic organizations and local rights groups have also condemned the attack in strong terms. They are urging the state government and federal authorities to step up security across vulnerable communities, especially in rural parts of the southeast where violent attacks have become increasingly frequent.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the massacre. Speculation continues to swirl over the motives behind the attack, with some suggesting it may have been linked to ongoing tensions involving local armed groups or criminal syndicates operating in the region. Authorities, however, are urging the public to avoid spreading unverified claims that may cause panic or hinder the investigation.

The Anambra State government has yet to release an official statement, but sources indicate that emergency meetings are being held to assess the situation and determine appropriate responses. Meanwhile, affected families are beginning the heartbreaking process of making funeral arrangements amid calls for government support.

Residents of Ogboji and neighboring communities remain on edge. Many are calling for more visible security patrols and the establishment of permanent security outposts to deter future attacks. For now, the priority remains identifying and arresting the perpetrators who brought such violence to a peaceful assembly.

The scars left by Monday’s massacre will not fade easily. As investigations unfold and the community attempts to rebuild from this tragedy, the people of Ogboji and the wider Ebonyi diaspora in Anambra await answers and, above all, justice.
