A grieving Nigerian father has publicly accused staff at a hospital in Abuja of causing the death of his newborn baby due to an unpaid bill. The distraught man recorded a video at the hospital that has now gone viral, in which he detailed the events leading up to the tragedy and described the alleged negligence he witnessed.
According to the father, his wife had consistently used the facility for her antenatal care, following all medical advice and fulfilling every requirement from the hospital. He explained that on the day of delivery, he was asked to pay ₦8000 for a medical procedure. Unable to immediately cover the full amount, he transferred only ₦3000 to the hospital before the procedure began. He claimed that while this payment was being processed, his newborn was left unattended.
The father alleged that hospital staff insisted on receiving the full payment before continuing care, despite his plea for them to proceed to save his child’s life. He described how the baby was already in critical condition and on oxygen from one hospital to another when the incident began. In his emotional account, he said the staff’s insistence on payment resulted in delays that ultimately cost his son his life.
“They killed my child here. I have done everything they asked me to do from day one. I begged the nurse yesterday to continue, I begged her, and she refused. This woman insisted on ₦8000. That amount has now cost me my son’s life,” the father said while weeping in the video.
The bereaved man also revealed that his wife, who was still at the hospital recovering from childbirth, was misled about her child’s condition. He claimed the hospital staff lied to her, saying that the baby had been transferred to another facility, adding another layer of distress to the family’s suffering.
The father’s video has sparked widespread outrage online, with many criticizing the hospital for alleged negligence and prioritizing financial matters over urgent medical care. Social media users have expressed concern over the standards of maternal and neonatal care in private facilities, calling for accountability and better protection for vulnerable patients.
Authorities and the hospital management have yet to respond publicly to the allegations. Legal and human rights experts say that such cases could involve both medical negligence and potential criminal liability, depending on the findings of official investigations.
This tragic incident highlights ongoing concerns about access to emergency medical care and the financial barriers that can prevent timely treatment, particularly in critical cases involving newborns. Families, advocacy groups, and policymakers are urging reforms to ensure that medical emergencies are never overshadowed by unpaid bills or administrative delays.
The grieving father continues to call for justice for his child, hoping that the public attention will pressure the hospital and authorities to act responsibly and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
