Nollywood Star Okon Lagos Demands Urgent Federal Action Against Sheikh Gumi To Address Escalating Bandit Violence

Fresh outrage has surfaced in Nigeria’s public space following a fiery appeal by Nollywood actor Imeh Bishop Umoh, popularly known as Okon Lagos, urging President Bola Tinubu to initiate legal proceedings against prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmed Gumi. The actor’s remarks have stirred intense debate as the country continues to struggle with worsening insecurity linked to banditry and terrorism.

Sheikh Gumi has long been associated with controversial engagements with armed groups across northern Nigeria. His visits to their camps and public commentary advocating negotiations with such groups have drawn criticism from many Nigerians. While the cleric insists his outreach efforts aim to secure peace, detractors argue that his posture emboldens criminals responsible for kidnappings, killings and widespread destruction.

Okon Lagos amplified these concerns in a strongly worded message shared on Instagram, describing Gumi as someone who openly sympathizes with bandit groups. He stressed that the Nigerian government has shown reluctance to take firm action, which he believes has weakened public trust and deepened national insecurity. According to him, the administration must muster the courage to invite the cleric for investigation and allow the law to determine his culpability or innocence.

The actor referenced former Kaduna State governor Nasir El Rufai’s long held view that only deceased terrorists can be considered repentant. He argued that this stance underscores the gravity of Nigeria’s ongoing crisis and the need for decisive measures. His post went further, urging authorities to treat all individuals or groups with suspected ties to terrorism equally, regardless of political or social influence.

Okon Lagos insisted that Nigeria’s current wave of violence demands actions that transcend political pressures. He maintained that the nation’s roads, farms, worship centers and rural communities have suffered extensive damage, leaving citizens fearful and desperate for safety. According to him, restoring stability requires a firm and fearless approach, even if it means challenging individuals often perceived as untouchable.

The entertainer expressed concern that the country is rapidly approaching collapse as criminal networks grow bolder. He appealed to President Tinubu to demonstrate leadership by prioritizing the protection of lives and property. While acknowledging the complexity of combating terrorism, he emphasized that a transparent and thorough investigation of figures linked to armed groups would send a powerful message that no one stands above the law.

His message ended on a hopeful note, expressing confidence that decisive action can rescue Nigeria from insecurity and guide the nation toward a safer future. The call has since sparked widespread reactions, with many Nigerians echoing his demands for accountability while others insist that any action must be grounded in verifiable evidence and due process.

This latest intervention by Okon Lagos adds to the growing chorus of voices urging stronger state action against terrorism as citizens continue to yearn for peace across the federation.
