Death has claimed Okey Ezea, the senator for Enugu North senatorial district in Enugu State, who also stood as the only remaining representative of the Labour Party from the state in the National Assembly. Senator Ezea died on Tuesday evening while receiving medical care after a brief illness.
His passing has sparked shock and grief across political circles. The state governor described the loss as a huge void for both Enugu State and the nation, noting his unwavering commitment to good governance. Colleagues in the Senate praised Ezea’s legislative contributions and dedication to public service, highlighting his active role in committees and national initiatives.
The senator had faced a prolonged medical struggle, including complications related to diabetes, and had undergone an amputation prior to his death. Although earlier reports suggested he was abroad for treatment, it was later confirmed that he passed away locally.
Ezea was elected to the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party platform, defeating an incumbent governor to claim the Enugu North seat. His election was notable, not only for the political upset, but because he remained the only federal lawmaker from Enugu State who did not defect from the Labour Party to the ruling party.
During his tenure, he served as Vice Chairman of key Senate committees and sponsored legislation aimed at development projects within his constituency. He championed bills for educational institutions and advocated for structural and administrative reforms in his state.
His death carries significant political implications, as it removes the last Labour Party voice from Enugu State in the National Assembly. With his passing, the party loses a critical presence, and constituents face the challenge of filling both the seat and the leadership gap he provided.
The family of Senator Ezea has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of sympathy and requested privacy and prayers during this difficult period.
