The Nnewi Youth Forum (NYF) has issued a public statement addressing circulating voice notes and messages on social media, which call on Nnewi youths to stage a protest against the forthcoming Nzuko Ora Nnewi election.
While acknowledging the fundamental right of citizens to peaceful protest and assembly, the group emphasized that such actions should be guided by sincerity, public interest, and verified information. The forum stressed that protests should not be instigated by misinformation or serve as a tool for creating unnecessary tension in the community.
The statement, signed by NYF President Ejim Emmanuel Ucheagwu, reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to fostering peace, unity, and progress in Nnewi. It made clear that the organization does not support any attempt to attack or undermine past or present leaders of the town. Instead, it encouraged collective efforts towards empowering the youth with entrepreneurial skills that would secure their future and contribute to the community’s development.
Furthermore, the NYF strongly urged individuals behind the planned protest to reconsider their stance, warning that they would be held accountable for any unrest that may arise from their actions. The forum advised all aspirants contesting positions in the Nzuko Ora Nnewi election to channel any grievances through established and recognized avenues, particularly through the Board of Trustees (BoT), which currently oversees the process.
Supporters of candidates were also advised to exercise restraint in their public statements, ensuring they do not make divisive or inflammatory remarks. The NYF warned against using social media as a platform for misleading narratives that could disrupt the town’s harmony.
In conclusion, the Nnewi Youth Forum called on all youths to remain law-abiding and shun any actions that could jeopardize the prevailing peace and progress in Nnewi. The forum reiterated its dedication to unity and development, urging all stakeholders to work together in the interest of the community.
